I thought @janemckinney.bsky.social and I would talk about Isochron Scepter in Take Five for like... 30-45 minutes. Anyway 90 minutes later there are way more things in the maybeboard and no changes to the mainboard 😂

Parker simply cannot stop cooking. 🔥
A tricky thing about #mtgcube, and Eternal deckbuilding more generally, is that pet cards don't always play well together.

It's not just "power creep," either. Magic's design ethos has changed so much over 30 years, it might as well be 4 different games:

Four TCGs in Magic's Trench Coat — Lucky Paper
Magic's design has changed so radically over 30+ years that it might as well be four different games. We break down those eras of design, and what they imply for the deckbuilders and Cube designers wh...

What are some mechanically simple cards, ideally in black, that you would prefer to discard? I’ve already looked through all the cards with the madness mechanic, so no need to mention any of those.

I'm coming into my 'clickbait thumbnail' era.

Also, Sundial is going to be so sick in this cube.

@andy.luckypaper.co is working on an awesome project where he's documenting the entire design process for a new Cube on YouTube- it's an insightful look under the hood, and I'm not just saying that because I joined him for this video to talk Chromantiflayer!

This week's next piece is, dare I say, the most complete exploration of hybrid mana in cube design ever written.

Researching this piece surprised me... I would have never guessed Red's first all-upside 2/2 at 2MV, and I bet you won't either.

Hybrid mana is a frequent design tool for Wizards and for the Cube designers who follow in their footsteps. But hybrid cards exhibit some predictably risky tendencies in Cube. Read on to find out why,...

TWO new #mtgcube articles this week? You better believe it.

First up, my thoughts on ATLAxMTG. ATLA was my favorite TV show as a teen. The set may be a good product, but if so, that's in spite of Magic's game engine, not because of it:

I got to thumb through this at Cube Con and it looks really cool. Love seeing cubes with such harsh restrictions on cards they can include!
I went pretty hard on expanding my white bordered (bar) cube into a full 360 cube for 8 players. My intent is to submit to Shoebox for consideration.

Please take a look at my Cube Vision and maybe do a test draft! Let me know if there are outliers that shouldn't be included for gameplay reasons.

I had 100 Ornithopters in the open play area at Cube Con and looking through the cube after the weekend to see the 3-0 alters I was heartbroken to find that someone drew OVER @klugalters.bsky.social's incredible Ornithopter. I assume someone thought it was just a different printing of the card? 😭😭😭

What are some examples of decks in any context using off-color cards? I.e. reanimator decks playing reanimation targets they can’t cast, Ovalchase Daredevil or Squee in decks without the mana to cast them just as repeated discard fodder, or hopefully more creative things I’m not aware of.
