Thread on solving the 90-in-180 day problem 🧵

The solutions to the 90-in-180 day problem are many and varied. Politicians really have **no** excuse for inaction.

Any of the following provide models for solutions or are solutions in themselves…

The point is to obtain permission for people to stay in Spain for 6 months per visit.

There are lots of ways to do that.
andrewhesselden.bsky.social
No, but new easy-to-obtain visas are a possible outcome of any campaign to abolish the requirement for visas.

Small minds. Small boats.

It’s time to think differently about about migration and mobility.

Did you know that freedom of movement is **required** in order to be an EU member?

But that you don’t necessarily need to be an EU member in order to have freedom of movement?

Did you know that as an EU citizen you can visit the UK for up to 6 months every time you visit?

You don’t even need a Visa, except you do need to pay £16 electronic travel authorisation once every two years.

Did you know there are four freedoms of movement in the context of the EU single market?

Have you heard about the 90-in-180-day problem, that affects some people after Brexit?

So what do we mean by it?

Although it also needs people to use the BlueSky reporting tools

What kind of content would you like me to make about freedom of movement, European mobility and the 90-in-180-day problem?

Drop me a comment with your thoughts

If I had Keir Starmer’s ear, then here’s what I’d suggest he does

I think at some point it might be necessary for you to evaluate or whether or not there are actual falsehoods at play here or whether this is a strawman put forward to mislead.

Because if you decide there are no falsehoods, then you might think differently about the whole thing.

The only people opposed to that must major on the idea of protectionism, and welcome the unique advantages they have in the UK and EU27/EEA/CH while British people are kept out of the EU27/EEA/CH market.

Or be the classic kind of anti immigrant types we all know so well.

Seems odd that the EU would be so fragile as to be at risk from it taking a more generous interpretation of the withdrawal agreement, or introducing the kind of reciprocal mobility agreements that I expect the EU wanted in the first place.

Time and time again we see their interest in mobility.

…the others think someone is correcting misinformation but the original screenshot was misrepresented in the first place.

So I’m not sure you can argue really useful with them without first deciding who is misinforming.

I understand why you don’t want to debate with these people with whether or not what I post is correct or incorrect, but what if what I post isn’t incorrect at all?

What if this Niall guy misrepresents what I’m saying and then (correctly) disassembles that false strawman?

What that means is…

I don't endorse Andrew's ideas as such, I just don't buy the idea the EU is so fragile it needs defending from someone voicing an opinion on Bluesky. Niall screenshotted me just for having abstract conversations of interest about the EU/Europe,as if it's not allowed because I have the wrong passport
andrewhesselden.bsky.social
Really? I don’t know why they’d think that.
