Septembersghost listen, i know phandom notoriously romanticizes erik and christine, it’s the nature of the thing and its allure, and i’ve no problem with that (even though i’m a raoul girlie at heart! Ind does not exist), but since i’m seeing some massively inaccurate bad faith takes on the bird app celebrating the show closing because it’s “toxic/problematic/glamorizes stalking/is about stockholm syndrome” (lol not this again) “the phantom is a bad abusive murderer” (yeah! the story KNOWS this! have any of these people ever once understood gothic romance? or fiction? or, like, joy…?), allow me to dust off a quick and ineloquent commentary on our heroine, miss christine daae: the phantom is not the protagonist. christine is. the emotional and psychological lens through which the story is told is christine’s. the journey and character growth from innocent ingenue to more knowing woman? christine’s. the character who radically transforms the narrative through her will, bravery, and compassion? christine! christine is the hero of her own story! christine overcomes extraordinary grief, trauma, gaslighting, manipulation, exploitation of her innate talents, an obsessive in pursuit of her, an entire company who doesn’t believe her and thinks she’s a mad child (even her beloved — the light romance contrasting the dark one — is guilty of this for a bit), and she does this with fortitude and reclamation of her self and her own voice, and by displaying extraordinary empathy. the phantom doesn’t let her go because he suddenly becomes “good” himself, or is “redeemed,” he lets her go because her goodness overwhelms him, her small act of tenderness even after she angrily and rightfully defies him forces him to realize she deserves her life. that to love someone does not mean you can treat them as a possession. (please note that in the book, he dies shortly afterward. his is an immense and broken love, and he is a tragic figure.) it is not a story about an abuser with the upper hand, it’s a story about a young woman who survives, grows, and LEAVES. her courage and grace is the fueling engine of the entire machine. her agency is paramount in the ending. i frankly won’t stand for erasure of that, and derivative takes about her as a hapless victim and the show as endorsing the phantom (it doesn’t) have always made me want to drop a few chandeliers. tearosesarts I feel like I’ve made this comparison before a long time ago, but it’s just like when people claiming to be feminists write off the first 4 Disney princesses as weak and bad role models. Are these characters really weak, or are you just victim-blaming? Do these stories really tell anti-feminist narratives, or did you just completely miss the point of the story? septembersghost exactly this (and it can be extended to belle as well, especially given that there are some direct parallels there, and the stockholm syndrome argument is thrown about in regards to her too, which i dislike so much). i’m a longtime known defender of the original princesses (snow white especially, but i love them all), who overcome abusive situations and varying difficulties with compassion and courage and a desire to find their way, just like what I was talking about with christine. the point is not what they suffer and endure, and they’re not “weak,” that wording is victim blaming and suggests there’s somehow a more empowering, or right and wrong, or right and wrong way, to respond to hurt and adversity. it dismisses their characters very smugly and denies them their growth and intrinsic worth. which, imo, is a much poorer way to interpret the stories. i’d always rather view them as the heroines they are.

One of my biggest challenges in my own recovery is swimming around in content that describes & validates my experience, but doesn't compassionately challenge me to shift how I think or function. We survivors NEED to pay attention to the integration of validation & compassionate self-challenge.

Overfunctioning to the point of exhaustion is a very effective way to guarantee we won't be able to protect ourselves when we need to.

Trauma Brain's insistence that overfunctioning somehow keeps us "safe" is a lie. It never did keep us safe-- not really.

The world will often spectacularly fail (or refuse) to understand that no trauma survivor is identifying as a "survivor" for "attention" or as an "excuse."

Do not buy into the world's superficial, insulting narratives about trauma.

Goal setting-- even the word "goals"-- can be triggering to trauma survivors who have had our self-esteem cooked by abuse or neglect. Understanding goals as helpful & supportive, not demands or attempts to control us, can take time.

Easy does it. Let this be a process.

An underappreciated form of support many survivors in trauma recovery find super helpful is someone to be w/ us-- not give advice, not try to change anything-- while we clean our physical environment, open our mail, or try to wrangle our finances.

Moral support helps "adulting."

Autistic people are not wired to be rigid.

Rigidity is a human response to the fear of our needs not being met. A logical one, even.

Because it's a mechanism that ensures our needs are met. Because when they go unmet, we suffer. Sometimes to an intolerable level.
