Experts say Amazon's arrival supercharged this process. The data centers suck up tens of millions of gallons of water from the aquifer each year to cool their computer equipment, which then gets funneled to the Port's wastewater system. All of the data center water gets mixed into the dirty lagoon wastewater, which only increases how much water the Port must then discard over the fields. As Greg Pettit, who served at the DEQ for 38 years and led the development of Oregon's Groundwater Quality, explains, "the more water you put on, the faster you're going to drive the nitrogen through the soil and down into the aquifer." As the underground aquifer became tainted with more nitrates, even the ostensibly clean water that the Port pulled from the aquifer's deepest wells - which it used to service its large industrial customers like Amazon - became polluted. Soon, Amazon was using water to cool its data warehouses with nitrates as high as 13 ppm - above the federal and state limits. When that tainted water moves through the data centers to absorb heat from the server systems, some of the water is evaporated, but the nitrates remain, increasing the concentration. That means that when the polluted water has moved through the data centers and back into the wastewater system, it's even more contaminated, sometimes averaging as high as 56 ppm, eight times Oregon's safety limit.

I need everybody to read this and understand what’s going on. These are spouses of US citizens in the country legally. They have entry clearance and green cards, they’ve passed background checks and have no criminal records. ICE is taking them anyway.

After weeks of trudging through Goldiee’s online mess, I went back to my inbox to deal with the rest of the pitches that were still sitting there waiting for me. I was a freelance writer for most of my career, so as an editor, I’ve always done my best to respond to every thoughtful pitch I get. Looking at them now, though, all I could see was the synthetic sheen of artificial intelligence. There were probably some promising young writers buried in there somewhere. But I couldn’t bear to dig through the bullshit to try to find them. I idly googled the authors of a few of the pitches that looked most blatantly written by AI. I saw their bylines across the internet—a web of lies and uncanny half-truths entrenched so deeply in the information ecosystem that no one could possibly have the energy to dislodge them—and I was struck by a brief but genuine moment of bone-deep despair. Then I closed my laptop.

The 2019 Meta research was based on a random sample of consumers who stopped their Facebook and Instagram usage for a month, the lawsuit said. The lawsuit alleged that Meta was disappointed that the initial tests of the study showed that people who stopped using Facebook “for a week reported lower feelings of depression, anxiety, loneliness, and social comparison.” Meta allegedly chose not to “sound the alarm,” but instead stopped the research, the lawsuit said. “The company never publicly disclosed the results of its deactivation study,” according to the suit. “Instead, Meta lied to Congress about what it knew.” The lawsuit cites an unnamed Meta employee who allegedly said, “If the results are bad and we don’t publish and they leak, is it going to look like tobacco companies doing research and knowing cigs were bad and then keeping that info to themselves?”

Some scientists and medical professionals are more worried about disappointing vaccination rates, a main reason why flu hospitalizations and deaths were unusually bad during last year's flu season — one of the deadliest this century. "I think we're going to see a really severe season," said Asefeh Faraz Covelli of the George Washington University School of Nursing. Last winter, the overall flu hospitalization rate was the highest seen since the H1N1 flu pandemic 15 years ago. Flu was the underlying or a contributing cause of more than 18,000 deaths, and one seven-day stretch early this year saw more than 1,800 deaths - the highest one-week spike in at least a decade. Child flu deaths also were far higher than usual.
