It’s definitively proven by David Kay Johnson in one of his two books about Trump that the casino was built to launder money for the Mob, but when the FBI broke their backs in the 80s, he went broke because of his bad business decisions and overspending.

My favorite casino story was Fred Trump walking into the casino, buying $3M in chips, then throwing them into the East River as a way of giving Trump funds to keep the ratholes open. That’s why Trump admired Adelson so much… he figured out a way to launder money out of China for their billionaires.
