When I studied the Second World War I genuinely could not understand how the Germans found so many people to participate in their worst excesses. And I mean across the whole war, not just concentration camps.

I don't have a problem understanding it any more...

POLITICO: “.. They referred to Black people as monkeys and ‘the watermelon people’ and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies .. and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery.

As an introvert with anxiety and panic disorders, I’m excited to see so many local options for the No Kings protest. I’m in the Twin Cities, so if I feel overwhelmed about going to the capitol in St Paul, I can find a smaller one in a suburb and still participate. I’m using this as a selling point!

I’ve read about some causes of arrested emotional maturation (becoming famous, for example) - but any thoughts on why this is seeming to happen so broadly so quickly in American culture? (Though maybe my axiom is wrong there, too…?)

And the best adaptation of any Dickens that has ever been put onto the screen, or ever will be, is the Muppets Christmas Carol. But I think that is quite possibly the least unhinged opinion it is possible to have about Dickens. It's simply fact.

We must overturn Citizens United. Money is not speech, it is not intelligence, it is not inherent value, and it does not give one the right to control politics.

Honestly, it needs to go further than this.

We need to confront the fact that democracy and wealth hoarding cannot coexist. Allowing people to amass the resources of a small state/country allows them to act as such, which is inimical to a shared society of “one person, one vote.”

“No Kings” is great , but we really don't get a functioning democracy back until we internalize, bone deep, the instinctive response to this and every other statement like it: “I don’t care what that rich guy thinks.”

Make it your morning affirmation. Say it ten times at the top of every hour.

One thought that few seem to care to utter is that you can't have viewpoint diversity to any great degree if you keep hiring people from the same four schools, all having the same professors. You get the view of one segment of a class hierarchy.

Interesting HuffPo article about vertical morality as an explanation for why evangelicals support this cruelty.

apple.news/A20X1GcLLQhy...

"Evangelicals are taught that all morality comes from God and therefore true goodness can only be spread by obeying God, even if it harms people around us," Ajoy said. "This isn't necessarily a bad thing if pleasing God manifests by following the teachings of Jesus - loving our neighbors, loving our enemies, promoting peace, and taking care of the poor, the widow, the immigrant, and standing up for the mar-ginalized. It becomes dangerous when Christians weaponize this vertical morality for power, which is exactly what we're seeing with the Christian nationalism in the Trump administration."
In the current era, conservative Christian nationalists see anyone on their political team as good and on God's side, while those who oppose them as evil and satanic.
"What's interesting is that Jesus taught a compassionate, flexible, grace-filled view of what it means to live a life loving God," Levings noted. "But today's conservative Christianity is less influenced by Jesus and more by the Old. Testament and Paul!"
"Horizontal morality prioritizes the wellbeing of our neighbors, communities and personal relationships," Ajoy explained.
"We act in ways that cause the least amount of harm to those around us, regardless of beliefs. Someone with vertical morality may help someone in need because they believe that's what God wants them to do, versus someone with horizontal morality may help that same person for the benefit of the person that needs help."
Rather than unquestioning obedience and superficial optics, this approach focuses on genuine empathy, compassion, and love toward others, recognizing the actual effects our actions have on people.
"I think both are important in the Christian faith, but a lot of people today get hung up on the vertical as a priority and forget about the horizontal altogether," said Malynda Hale, an advocate and executive director of The New Evangelicals, a nonprofit focused on promoting inclusivity, justice, and compassion in Christianity.

There’s a real assumption here about what it means to “cover and sell news” - if Weiss’s way of doing it is laudable, we don’t have the same values. Is it good to “take on the mob” when that mob is promoting pro-social values and literally the truth? The underlying axioms here are concerning.
