Since it's #MerMay, I wanted to post my character design interpretations from last year of Hans Christian Andersen’s #TheLittleMermaid fairy tale! This is my take on the mer-heroine (I've named her Iniya), complete with a wreath of lilies and oysters, as well as her veil from the original story!

Here’s the human form of Iniya, my interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen’s little mermaid character.

These are my interpretations of the eldest sisters from Hans Christian Andersen's #TheLittleMermaid story, before and after they’ve sold their hair to the Sea Witch. I had a lot of fun trying to make sure they all were distinct and had personality in their designs and decorations. #MerMay #art

Here’s my interpretation of the Sea King from Hans Christian Andersen’s #TheLittleMermaid story. I liked the idea of him being like a seahorse, and birthing all the mermaid children himself.

Here’s my interpretation of the grandmother/queen mother character from Hans Christian Andersen’s #TheLittleMermaid. story. I love drawing old lady characters and I knew I wanted her to be cute and plump. #MerMay #mermaid #art #illustration

Finally, here’s the last merperson before I move on to the human characters for my take on Hans Christian Andersen’s #TheLittleMermaid story. I included the potion she gives to the mermaid as well as her toad and snake pets mentioned in the story! #MerMay #mermaid #fairytale #art #illustration

Continuing with my designs for Hans Christian Andersen's #TheLittleMermaid story, this is my take on the woman who the little mermaid ultimately loses her true love to. I’ve named her Abigail, and I just wanted her to look sweet and doll-like. #MerMay #art #illustration #fairytale

Finally for my take on Hans Christian Andersen's #TheLittleMermaid story, this is the “prince” character, but in the form of a princess in my version. Since the story has queer origins, it made sense to me to interpret it that way. #MerMay #fairytale #art #illustration #characterdesigns

Amazing how a bunch of broke-ass furries can keep churning out amazing art, stories and animations constantly but billion-dollar companies are like “nooo we need AI, making stuff is haaard and our investors want more moneyyy.”

"You shouldn't make art for the money" buddy I'll take it one step further and say we shouldn't have to labor for capital at all but in the meantime pay an artist

Finding & working with clients (a thread)

This is a general approach which should be broadly applicable. Although I’ll primarily be using book covers as an example, this approach should work for TTRPGs, TCGs, games, film, etc. to varying degrees depending on the industry and its needs.

If you’re intimidated about drawing/learning to draw because you feel like you have no idea what you’re doing: Most of those who draw regularly also have no idea what were doing. We’re all bullshitting our way through and hoping for the best. That’s how all your favourite art is born, I promise
