He wanted this moment to be special, to be perfect. All he really needed to achieve perfection was the other half of the equation, the missing part of his heart, the love who could make the sun shine with a single smile… Arran sighed. He could feel every stone of Rivington’s cobbles through the holes in his boots, what remained of his clothes amounted to an outfit that beggars would be embarrassed to be seen in, there were barely two coins in his pocket, but he was here and he was, against all possible odds, alive. Gods… Whichever ones were still listening, gods he was thankful for that. Now he just had to wait here, for sunset, by the main entrance to Baldur’s Gate. That was their plan, after all, and a simple one too – even if Dairow got here before him, the sun set every day and the city’s huge gate was hard to miss. And so, Arran waited. Time ticked by as the light waned, the last rays of dim glow subsiding to the cold moonlight… Perhaps Dairow was busy, he had taken work with the Guild after all, and their work may often take them to night… He hugged his knees to his chest, resolving himself to wait as long as it might take. His husband had to be here, their love had kept him alive through everything to arrive at the city with only the hope and the promise to look forward to. Even when the refugees he had travelled with had been attacked, even when his dear brother Garrett had fled the other way in the chaos, even when Arran was all alone he held tight to those words whispered in the moonlight before they left Elturel. We will meet again, we will make our own future, no matter what it takes. When the sun sets upon the city, I will meet you at the Gates.
