The legend of #Nezha is taken straight from the Chinese #mythology classic "Investiture of the Gods" (aka "Fengshen Yanyi" 封神演義). His story is retold in the Sword Maiden from the Moon duology with a twist: after reincarnation, he assumes a feminine side as he was remade from lotus petals.

🎨 Nezha, Huang Guangjian. This story has various details. According to "Journey to the West," Nezha's actions were discovered by his father. Fearing trouble, Li Jing decided to kill his own son. Enraged, Nezha took a knife, cut off his own flesh to repay his mother, and removed his bones to repay his father before choosing to end his own life. In addition, in "Investiture of the Gods", the one who helps Nezha reincarnate as a lotus is Taiyi Zhenren, while in "Journey to the West," it is the Buddha.

Of course some twists are entirely fictional, like giving Empress Sun a backstory of being an orphaned victim of the Jingnan purge and making her and Empress Hu sisters. But the rest is not that far from real history except that historians are biased against Sun, who was a beloved of Emperor Xuande.

I've done 7 episodes of #StoryofMinglan and am glad to say I'm totally invested in the story. The pacing is just right with angsty twists and turns; the acting is great (little Minglan is a shining star and I adore the grandma!)& the themes are promising.

I had read Confessions of Catherine de Medici and had learned about the background of this stretch of French history. Marguerite de Valois (Queen Margot) is Catherine's daughter and is apparently maligned by historians! So, badmouthing women in power doesn't only happen in China!!!
