Supermarkets were the first to realise data has value so initially offered free stuff (via points) for giving them data. Then they realised people are thick and give data to other companies for free so they changed it to 'we will punish you if you don't give us the data'.

Its not often I get to talk about my dissertation on Scotland and the Canadian fur trade.
But an advantage Scots had over our English and French counter parts is Scots from all backgrounds could speak multiple languages & we were prepared to learn local ones. The Eng/Fre wouldn't. Languages are good
