@dpzollinger.bsky.social and I are thrilled "Cleavage Politics in Western Democracies" is out as an SI at @wepsocial.bsky.social!

Its papers explore the foundations of the cleavage pitting new left against radical right parties, and how it compares to the classic cleavages of Lipset & Rokkan:

35 years ago, on October 3, 1990, Germany was reunified. Just two months later, voters in the former GDR went to the polls in the first free federal election since the Weimar era. Despite decades of socialist dictatorship, East German voting behavior displayed marked regional differences. Thread🧵

Taking a closer look at @mierkezat.bsky.social @swenhutter.bsky.social & @eborbath.bsky.social's paper on cleavage formation and civil society and cannot recommend it highly enough! Really insightful theorizing, e.g. on changes in the form of civil society and its effect on group-party linkages:

🔔 Very happy to see our paper published open access on cleavage theory and civil society! 📖

We have tried to sketch a new research agenda, that I think has a lot of potential.

I very much enjoyed working on this!

The fun in the bar is definitely at a critical juncture when someone whips out a structural equation model on their phone

🚨 New article out in Journal of Civil Society with Swen Hutter!

We explore how civil society organizations (CSOs) mobilized volunteers during the COVID-19 pandemic, a moment of both rising need and shrinking organizational capacity.

I must admit that I was thrown off by the Bourdieu reference, but this is a very interesting contribution to the "cleavage politics" literature that should be read together with the groundbreaking new Cambridge Elements by Bornschier et al.

Transatlantic Relationship waxes & wanes, but this week was a low point

Since 2016 🇪🇺 had time to prepare, but perhaps because it didn’t want divorce to be final, did too little

What do Europeans think? @eupinions.bsky.social found out

In 2017 just 25 % wanted 🇪🇺 to go its own way; 2024 > 60 %

Turns out that the cultural cleavage is alive and kicking in Belgium's French-speaking region

So why have we (still!) not seen the rise of a Francophone far-right party?

A commonly held notion is that Germany's far-right party AfD is especially successful in the country's more rural areas. However, a look at the party's election results in over 10,000 municipalities suggests that the link between rurality and AfD support is rather diffuse. A simple thread. 🧵👇
