Just dug out the physical file for a 2008 manuscript so I could find the scrap of legal pad paper with my hand-written research notes on Ireland to add to a new manuscript undergoing revision.

This is why my office is overstuffed: two decades of post-its and paper scraps meticulously filed away.

Didn't have to go this hard.

Did.

Trying to focus on providing critiques and writing feedback (volunteer work) and/or editing my manuscript, but Ziggy is at the ER vet for the next 24hrs minimum for a blocked urinary tract, so naturally I keep thinking of him.

Hug your furry babies for me. I'm missing mine something fierce.

I have flipped the order of the opening sentence of this manuscript no less than 10 times now (not exaggerating). I'm about to give up and send it to my critique group and ask them to vote on which sounds better.

So, you know, slamming my head against my editorial desk today. 🙃

Yep, still allergic to soy.

Nothing quite like frantically searching the house for antihistamines at 2 in the morning.

Today, I'm a zombie. Don't disturb the zombie on the sofa.

Waiting for the Bainbridge Ferry from Seattle so we can go to our first stop of Indie Bookstore Day: @eagleharborbooks.bsky.social

From there we're headed to Liberty Bay Books and Away with Words in Poulsbo, before going to Saltwater Bookshop in Kingston and catching the ferry to Edmonds.

Hitting up 15 local bookstores tomorrow and 9 on Sunday. Can't wait to go to some old favorites and to discover some new-to-me bookstores.

Shop and support local.

Ziggy sat in the chair next to me all day today while I did a final round of job interviews for a new role.

Don't know if I got the job, but I've got the sweetest, cutest cat sticking by my side no matter what.

We've now planned out 15 bookstores on Saturday, 9 on Sunday and the final 5 on Monday/Tuesday.

Looking forward to a car ferry one day and a passenger express ferry on another!

My partner just walked into the bedroom where I'm re-reading my manuscript before the next round of edits and said, "Okay, so we need to plan our route to hit all 29 bookstores."

Me: Uh, what?

Him: Independent Bookstore Day is next Saturday. We've got to go to all the participating bookstores.

Finished the "beef up the suspense thread" round of revisions to my latest WIP. It's now 107k words. 😬

Need to read-through to make sure all the threads are there and the arcs work, but I can't stop thinking about the major cutting round that comes after that.

It's going to be brutal.

There is a mindset among a lot of people that creative work involves magic, not skill. "I wish I could do that!" as if creative practices are not, y'know, things you practice. And imo the flip side of that belief is that creative workers do not deserve wages because they have Magic.

My partner, pointing at a floor plan on my computer: So, uh, what's this?

Me: Glad you asked. It's the ground floor of the Corinthia, where the opening chapters of my manuscript take place.

Partner *scoffs, then laughs*: Nerd.

Anyway, I'm editing today in addition to applying for jobs.

Ziggy is a very schedule oriented cat.

He's unimpressed with daylight savings time.

So unimpressed that he's refusing to get out of bed for his morning wet food.

Bud, I feel ya. That we do this twice a year is silly.

Me: So, looks like I'll be doing a total rewrite for a 3rd, or is it 4th time?

Critique partner: Definitely 4th. And I'm here for it.

Been with this group for 10 years. They're pretty darn great.

Having a supportive writing community is HUGE.

I will never not promote libraries, they are a vast public good and worth celebrating for themselves, and also they buy lots of books, which keeps a whole bunch of authors in the business. Please support them!
I recall you promoting libraries as well, as long as we're reading.

Just lost myself to 40 minutes of research on stockings vs socks in the 1940s. Even consulted my best friend and historical costuming expert for her hot take.

This is apparently where 'last' round revisions get me on an alt history murder mystery.

Stockings/socks are not critical to the plot.

I really miss having a physical cable connecting my computer and printer.

Printer is offline, you say?

Well the printer says it's online and fully function. So...

Here's your daily reminder that bookstores keep the love of reading alive — but they also keep neighborhoods beautiful. They are places to gather, to celebrate stories, to find community.

Please do your holiday shopping at your local independent bookstore, if you are lucky enough to still have one.
