Monoallelic IFT140 Variants Causing Childhood-Onset Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease

bit.ly/3J9ZIWT
Radiology imaging of pediatric ADPKD-IFT140 cases. (A, B) Case IFT1-IV-2: MRI at 17 years of age showing 12 cysts on the right kidney and 16 on the left. The largest measures 26 mm on the lower pole of the right and 4 cm on the upper pole of the left. The majority are <5 mm in length. A: Coronal T2 image (MRI) with the arrow pointing to the 4 cm cyst with internal septation located at the upper pole of the left kidney. B: Coronal T2 MRI with the arrow pointing at the 26 mm simple cyst on the lower pole of the right kidney. (C, D) Case IFT1-IV-4: Ultrasound imaging at 4 years of age showing 3 cysts on the right kidney and none on the left. All cysts measured 2-5 mm. Longitudinal ultrasound pictures of the right kidney with the arrow pointing at the cysts. (E, F) Case IFT2-III-5: Ultrasound imaging at 9 months old showing multiple cysts on the right kidney with a 3 cm cyst on the upper pole and a 0.7 cm cyst on the left kidney.

Shared Decision Making in Health Care Visits for CKD: Patients’ Decisional Role Preferences and Experiences

bit.ly/45m2Swf #OpenAccess

#CKD
Survey: patients’ experienced versus preferred decisional role per decision topic: visualization per decision topic of the total number of patients whose preferred decisional role did or did not match their experienced role. In the left column, the decision topic includes the number of patients who indicated having discussed the decision in the previous health care visit. Light grey: number of patients who experienced their decisions as less shared or patient directed than preferred; darker grey: number of patients for whom experienced decisional role matched their preferred role; darkest grey: number of patients who experienced their decisional role as more shared or patient directed than preferred.

bit.ly/3IEz9Jq (FREE)
Two small peripheral foci of segmental sclerosis with intracapillary foam cells and prominence of overlying visceral epithelial cells (right glomerulus), with normal left glomerulus by light microscopy, representative of an early segmental sclerosing lesion in focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, not otherwise specified variant (Jones silver stain). Trends in Outcomes Among Patients Initiating Peritoneal Dialysis in the United States, 2009-2018

bit.ly/4h4uVHG
Trends in 1-year probability of mortality among incident peritoneal dialysis patients by patient age category, race/ethnicity, Social Deprivation Index category, urban/nonurban residence, 2009-2018, unadjusted analysis. Mortality trends evaluated by (A) age group, (B) Social Deprivation Index group (1-100 scale, 1=least deprived), (C) urban or nonurban location of patient residence, and (D) race or ethnicity group. The 1-year cumulative incidence of mortality from peritoneal dialysis initiation at end-stage kidney disease first service date was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method.

Discordances Between Creatinine- and Cystatin C–Based Estimated GFR and Adverse Clinical Outcomes in Routine Clinical Practice

bit.ly/4491HQp #OpenAccess
(A) Univariate correlation between eGFRcys and eGFRcr, and (B) scatterplot of eGFRcr versus eGFRdiff at baseline. Shown are correlations in a random 1% sample of 1,569 observations. The blue line shows the line of identity, and red line marks eGFRdiff higher and lower than 15mL/min/1.73m2. Abbreviations: cr, creatinine; cys, cystatin C; eGFR, estimated glomerular filtration rate.

Targeting Inflammation in CKD

bit.ly/46TMzsY (FREE)
Inflammatory Signaling and Potential Therapeutic Targets in CKD. Sterile inflammation triggered by innate immune system activation is a key driver of both chronic kidney disease (CKD) and associated atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease (CVD), in part via activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. Recent and ongoing clinical trials are testing therapeutics targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome, interleukin-1 (IL-1) and its receptor (IL-1R), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and its receptor (IL6R), as represented in this schematic.

Immunofluorescence and Electron Microscopy in Genetically Engineered Pig-to-Human Kidney Xenotransplantation: A Case Report

bit.ly/3VTpKka
Case 1 xenografts. (A) Left preimplantation biopsy shows glomerulus with mild increase in mesangial matrix and segmental increase in mesangial cellularity (periodic acid-Schiff hematoxylin, ×20). (B) Right postimplantation biopsy, postoperative day (POD) 2, shows diffuse tubular epithelial cell necrosis with loss of nuclei and frequent granular casts. The glomerulus shows rare lumina occluded by fibrin thrombi (arrows); the rest of the capillaries are congested (periodic acid-Schiff hematoxylin, ×20). (C) Left preimplantation biopsy; immunofluorescence shows global granular staining for immunoglobulin M (IgM) limited to the mesangium (fluorescein isothiocyanate anti-human IgM). (D) Right preimplantation biopsy shows electron-dense immune complex deposits within the expanded mesangium (uranyl acetate and lead citrate, ×4,000).
