the question was about lawful residents not citizens though. and if you’re a resident and claim to be a citizen, and are found to be lying, then you’re in a world of trouble.
It is officially a legal requirement for green card holders. It’s never enforced of course - or rather hasn’t been until now.
but I heard that those individuals may promptly go free after making clear to the immigration officers that they are U.S. citizens or otherwise legally in the United States
