funny you should mention it, the one flaw with the book i would say is the aristocratic lineage of the white authors but they make up for it with pure scholarship.

the most popular and widespread form of theft is wage theft from employers. the fact that your employer can call the police if you steal from them but you can't call the police if they steal your wages, should tell you almost everything you need to know about the police and their function in society

the labor in rice fields (south carolina) or sugar plantations (louisiana) was deadly. these places would always have an import market because they were literally working their slaves to death. virginia wanted to be the sole supplier.

thanks to The American Slave Coast, i know that Virginia was primarily a slave export market that also saw their slaves as a speculative asset. breeding slaves is a lot like accumulating interest. but competing imports would have reduced the value of those assets.

i was just thinking about how little space in “the battle fry of freedom” is dedicated to the movement to resume the african slave trade after 1808, and the southern opposition to it. far more space is dedicated to william walker’s expansionist ventures, for example. i would have had a lot of Qs.

people are always on about “there is SOME scam out there that would catch you!” ok but the scam that would catch me would take WAY more effort than this
