She had left her hair tie there. He had noticed it a few nights ago as he went to turn off the lights. She had tossed it on the side table when she let her hair down as she rode on top of him. He remembered how she looked when her hair fell free around her face, how it tickled when she bent forward to kiss him. How he had fisted his hands in the tussled locks to hold her closer to him. Now there was only the thin black elastic wrapped around the bottom of his lamp to remind him she’d been here at all. Well that. And everything else.

Do you suppose you will still be home this Wednesday eve? Five days did not seem so very long when we parted, but—oh! you must forgive me a little sentimentality and not take it as cause for true concern—I have been restless at night and all the warming pans in the world cannot make up for the warmth of my husband. I admit, too, that this month’s symptoms continue to include the kind of hunger that cannot be sated by anything from the kitchens, and I am aching to have you in any (or perhaps every) way possible. Now, do not mistake the above for complaint or recrimination. I stand by what we agreed, which is that Alderaan must be represented in Parliament; and if you did not vote as your father’s proxy, he should be obliged to go; and furthermore, if I accompanied you, your parents would come regardless, defeating the whole purpose of sparing the rest of us a muddy, miserable journey. You know all this, but I have written it out regardless as a reminder that there is no need to feel guilty nor to call for the carriage at this very minute—only that I dearly hope to have you in my arms again soon. No, he thought, he was starting to think of her in a way that was improbable, impossible. Rey’s hand is sweaty on the orange plastic phone on the front desk at the precinct. The balding officer, who smells of stale coffee and old cigarettes, looks like he’s calculating overtime in his head. “Just one call,” he says, flicking through a copy of the Post’s sport section. She runs through the names of comrades in her head. People who would be more than willing to sit in the overly-heated waiting room all night until she’s processed and released. She thinks of the phone-trees she’ll activate. The sleeping people who’ll be woken up for her. Again. With a sinking feeling, Rey dials the number she has memorized because she told herself it would help her forget. It rings, and for a moment she thinks he won’t answer. In a way, it would be a relief. Proof that he’s the wrong person to call, that he cannot, in fact, be relied upon. But no. The line clicks.“Rey?” His voice has a rough edge from sleepless nights spent over briefs and appeals, from too many cups of coffee too late in the day. She swallows. Doesn’t answer. “Rey?” She hears soft shuffling, the sound of sheets being thrown back. She can almost feel them. He clears his throat. Then, more softly: “Did you get booked again?” He can’t see her, but Rey nods, tears threatening finally to burst out of her seams. She hasn’t cried all day. Not from the heady adrenaline before the action, or the clutching fear when it became obvious the police had already been tipped off. Not from the pain in her zip-tied wrists in the militarized cop-carrier. Not even when Rose cried, more out of frustration at her careful plans being thwarted than anything. But it’s the softness Ben reserves for her that undoes Rey. She does not want to be in anyone’s custody. Especially his. “Tell me where you are, Rey.” He’ll be there soon, cash in hand. Crumpled suit and snow in his hair. “And in the meantime, you remember what I told you?” “Yeah,” Rey says at last. “No comment.” * The chill of the air outside the precinct doors knocks the life back into her. Ben eyes her with a sideways glance, his hands on his lapels though he’s going to offer her his coat. But he doesn’t. He knows better now.
