I've had a wave of new followers so I thought I'd do a post to introduce myself. Feel free to introduce yourself in the replies!

I'm Sarah (she/they) and I am a freelancer who focuses on science communication and equity, diversity and inclusion. I am particularly passionate about LGBTQ+ inclusion.
Sarah talking in front of a projector. On the project is a slide with a three set Venn diagram with a word in each circle: woman, biracial and asexual. On the bottom left hand corner of the slide is the asexual flag and on the bottom right hand corner of the slide is the Philippine flag.

Oh gosh yes. I think how much section 28 impacted me too. And also how people don't realise it's acephobia and/or know what it looks like 🙃
acescicomm.bsky.social
This is such a common experience. I'm sorry that was your experience ❤️

Mine was more a confused one, and in hindsight I would describe it as feeling like I wasn't good at being straight. Turns out I just wasn't 😂

However: this is my story. Coming out looks different for everyone, and for lots of different reasons. For some people, coming out openly isn't not an option. Some may share some aspects of their queerness and not others.

If this is you: you are not less queer for this. You are still you ❤️

I've recently been consulting on a resource. I've been thinking of how much of my personal experiences informed it, and how this resource could have helped a baby queer me.

I think of this a lot with some other work that I do, and also how amazing it is to be able to do this kind of work.

Today marks 5 years since I came out publicly as asexual. It was a bit scary at first, and it's incredible to see how much my personal and professional life has changed since then.

I'm still learning about my queer self and peeling away the layers created by the societal norms that I grew up with.

I'm fortunate that when I'm sick, I can get to a postbox or the depot drop to mail stuff.

If you don't have that luxury, please remember to mask up when you're at the post, shops, etc.

There's a lot of COVID & other seasonal lurgies going around, & some of us spoonies still can't get boosters RN.

THIS!

And your regular reminder that your ‘just a cold’ could be considerably worse for others.

I know that, realistically, people are done masking here.

Not least cos the UK pretty much has a fucken moratorium on talking about COVID, masks, etc at the moment.

But if you can avoid spreading your seasonal germs of any kind, please do.

(Cos OMFGs I have enuf wrong with me already aarg 😭)

Today is the National Coming Out Day.

Find out how "out" our 2022 ace respondents were to different groups.

#asexual #asexuality #ace #acecommunitysurvey #demisexual #demisexuality #graysexual #graysexuality #NationalComingOutDay
White letters that say "Being out" over a purple background and the logo of the Ace Community Survey Team (four squares colored with the asexual flag colors. The last one has a white tick over it). 53.1% of aces were out to all their current partners, while 26.1% were not out to any of their partners. Almost a quarter (23.0%) of ace respondents were out to all their ex-partners, and 45.5% had not disclosed their ace identity at all to their ex-partners.
29.9% of ace respondents were out to all people in their household, while 22.9% were out to all their parents. Few ace respondents (5.2%) were out to all other family members.
The majority of ace respondents were out to either all (45.5%), most (28.4%), or few (17.4%) of their LGBTQIA+ friends. Slightly more than three quarters (78.5%) of ace respondents were also out to at least a few of their non-LGBTQIA+ friends.
Ace respondents were rarely out to counselors (17.9% to all, 62.4% to none) teachers and school staff (2.4% to all, 81.6% to none), coworkers (3.8% to all, 69.5% to none), and medical professionals (6.6% to all, 68.9% to none).

I might be biased but I think my lesbian enamel pin designs are some of my best.

Happy #InternationalLesbianDay! canopyrobin.etsy.com
three enamel pins in lesbian colours: a frog, a circle that says "It's Dr, actually", and a rectangular lesbian flag with a trans inclusive chevron on the left.

"arson" "hate crime" a deliberate attack on a mosque isn't described as a "terrorist attack".
Two tier journalism of attacks on places of worship.
Antisemitism & Islamophobia are both wrong.
Our government & other right wing parties are deliberately conflagrating religions with Israel & Palestine

Last night there was an arson attack on a mosque in Peacehaven.

Putting some context in...
The kids are alright. Be they in the Philippines or Stateside.
acescicomm.bsky.social
The protests yesterday reminded me of this movement. Seeing the recent corruption feels like a repeat of history.

If you are in the Philippines, know that I am thinking of you. If you're taking part in the protests, know I am proud of you and wish for you and your loved ones to be safe. Ingat ka.
acescicomm.bsky.social
The protests took place yesterday, which was also the anniversary of declaration of martial law by Ferdinand Marcos, who is the father of the current president. He was known to also take tax payers money to fund his family's lifestyle. He was forced out in 1986 by the People Power Revolution.

Over the last day I've seen many videos of Filipinos protesting against corruption (within flooding projects) in the Philippines.

Every time I see these videos, I feel emotional. I am so proud to see Filipinos participating. But also sad because of seeing years of corruption and injustice.

Purging the Philippine Government of corruption is essential for disaster risk reduction and management. If you examine things more closely, it is not the typhoon per se that kills people.

Happy #BiVisibilityWeek! The label doesn't really fit me these days but, as a plant scientist, I can confirm that bisexual flowers are perfect. Also I made some bi frog pins...
an enamel pin of a frog in bi colours sitting on an arrowhead leaf a flower enamel pin in bisexual colours. It is on a backing card which reads "A perfect flower by canopy robin. Did you know that 90% of flowering plants have individual flowers with both male and female parts. botanists call this a bisexual or perfect flower."

The speakers were incredible 😭 Hearing from them was something I think I really needed. They were really inspiring and gave me so much food for thought for my advocacy work. Thank you to everyone who came along!
