Hello folks! Elections for NWSA constituency/interest groups open September & we will have 2 co-chair positions open: one is a 2yr term, the other is a 1yr term

My term as chair ends this year, so please consider running -- our group will be inactive if we do not have a chair/co-chairs!

Go check out Debbie's book "Portalmania" -- out now!! #asexuality #asexual #ace #compulsorysexuality
I study asexuality for a living. But sometimes I find that fiction can reveal things research can't.

"Portalmania," a new story collection by Debbie Urbanski, offers thought-provoking—and sometimes disturbing—reflections on being asexual in a sea of compulsory sexuality.
Cover of the book "Portalmania" by Debbie Urbanski. The cover is green with pink text and has a retro/sci-fi vibe.

Asexuals are not excluded from this kind of surveillance risk either (especially JKR and others increasingly target us), we may be coded as F52.0 Hypoactive sexual desire disorder- I suspect I may be myself, my first counselor I saw about a decade ago was skeptical about the concept of asexuality
This should send a chill down the spines of every sexually-active member of the LGBT Community who has ever disclosed their sexual orientation to a physician. We're coded as Z72.52 — High-Risk Homosexual Behavior.

This is a test run of using medical coding to create a list of targets for the Feds.

Excited to share this wonderful article I wrote with @mcsociology.bsky.social #asexuality #aromanticism #asexualitystudies #compulsorysexuality
This was a delightful roast to read -- both for myself & my students 😂
Thank you! And even more important to continue these discussions as well in future research!
While this article addresses the issue of asexuality being absent from queer research, it also engages in conversations about the relationship between asexuality, the state, legibility, immigration, and ace asylum seekers!

Distinguishing between sexual and romantic orientations is common in asexual communities... yet there's no research specifically about the split attraction model.

Until now!

I just published a study in Social Currents about split attraction. You can read it here:
Splitting Attraction: Differentiating Romantic and Sexual Orientations Among Asexual Individuals - Canton Winer, 2024
It is often assumed that sexual and romantic attractions are aligned: that the gender(s) a person is attracted to sexually “matches” the gender(s) to which they...
