Having kids requires redesigning some core patterns. Many people fear — or can't pursue — this kind of redesign. It's hard! But kids will be a burden if you don't adapt purposefully.

(I wonder if rising first-time parent age has made this change harder, since these patterns have deepened.)

One hypothesis I have is that art using standard authoritarian imagery feels trenchant now because the US is undergoing a very textbook authoritarian moment, so even common tropes feel immediate. A friend told me when he saw OBAA he thought: This looks just like Argentina when I was a kid!

My wife and I collect examples of the Walt’s Special, named after Walt’s Hot Dogs, a roadside stand in Rhode Island. Hot dogs $2 each, soda $1, but Walt’s Special was two hot dogs and a soda for $6. A marketing legend.

I also wonder to what degree this is downstream of the gender segregation of the internet which has, I think, resulted in men subjecting themselves more to the male gaze in the absence of a female perspective.

All subscription revenue (iCloud, TV+, etc) is ~25% of services. So if “over-storage” were 10% (which would be very high) that’d be 2.5% of services. So, small…until one realizes 2.5% of services is almost $3b!

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.
