For sure, even the friendly retail spaces have been squeezed out in favour of profits, there used to be arcades, game shops, comic shops, etc that you could hang out at without spending much or any money, a lot of them couldn't compete with Amazon, etc, let alone streaming on-demand media

Feels like the sentiment to go back towards smaller communities is getting stronger, but it's still swimming through custard. Why would we put down our feel-good machine for something that doesn't deliver a dopamine injection (let alone cash money, for a lot of people)

Socmed has poisoned us to think that's normal interaction. Like, I had to push past it to write this 2nd reply cos it feels taboo to hold someone's attention for this long!
I feel like it affects F2F too, everyone I speak to is holding a phone the whole time...

Speaks to the points Belle makes in her writeup; where are clubs now? It seems like people in general resist joining a group unless that's what the platform *does*, and all the platforms want everyone populating the master feed now.

I don't want to sound ungrateful, it's amazing that I'm even being acknowledged by 👀 over 350 people 🫣 and I appreciate the support in whatever form, but I would trade every one of those dopamine injections for a single meaningful conversation with another human being. This is what they took from us

Very interesting read.
I lurked DA but I never really 'got it'. When I started learning art and doing social media last year I was struck by the bitter loneliness of it all. BSKY is better than IG, but not by much.

I miss the old days where you could jump into a chat room and make a real friend.

It's hard to imagine going from where we are to there, but it's an important dream to hold.
I've certainly got my own thoughts, if not necessarily whole solutions or a viable plan...
Have you read LeGuin? I haven't gotten around to it, but I hear she explores it well.

That, plus capitalism created incentives to do the work of making someone rich instead of the things that add real value to your community. I stopped doing childcare (which I loved and was good at) because there's more money in retail logistics (which I'm also pretty good at, but I hate)

Yeah, it's honestly intuitive once you shake off the capitalist programming: person need food, food exists in community, person gets food. Not enough food? Community makes more food, because people need food. How do you track who did their share? You don't, person needs food.
