Fun fact, you should memorize your important numbers, just incase you lose access to your phone.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Doing Endless Waltz and Hathaway as a double feature is wild, seeing them together really shows that these are opposite movies

Coming off Japan Society screening of Endless Waltz, the funniest thing about Gundam Wing is how bereft of ideology it can be. People are literally fighting about the idea of fighting.

"Disaster Lesbian" sounds like the name of a kickass superhero

right, but I mean we're talking about a spectrum between "Wizard Barristers" and "Mezzo Forte". I'm a bit worried by, " if you've seen director... Umetsu's classic works like Kite and Mezzo Forte, you know what to expect from this film." I mean Mezzo and Kite are basically Porno...

I feel like industrial design has really fallen by the wayside in a lot of ways honestly. Either that or I'm just acting on a sense of nostalgia...

@annlynzee.bsky.social trigger warning for Virgin Punk? I want to take my wife but if it's anything near Mezzo or Kite in terms of explicit material, it's going to have to be a skip.

Cops in Portland literally just stopped ICE from running over protesters and threatened them with arrest. The commander of the Oregon National Guard stated on the record that if they were mobilized under article 10, that they'd be there to protect protestors.

The next couple questions are just as good with Simon tearing into Shapiro and holding fast:
SHAPIRO: You would rather put a gun in your mouth?

SIMON: I mean, what you're saying to me, effectively, is there's no original way to do anything and...

SHAPIRO: No.

SIMON: Yes, you are.

SHAPIRO: That seems like a kind of absolutist take.

SIMON: Not only I think is it a fundamental violation of the integrity of writers and also of copyright to - you know, when I sold all the scripts I sold, you know, 150 to HBO and, you know, maybe another 50 to NBC, I didn't sell them so that they could be thrown into a computer with other people's and be used again by a corporation. So...

SHAPIRO: So would you ever agree to a contract that saw any role for AI at all?

SIMON: No. I would not.

I had a polite discussion with someone about AI in a coffee shop. I tried to explain to them that it was just a plagiarism machine, he replied "but look, I can summarize a book in seconds! Isn't this amazing!?" I merely said, "I prefer to do my thinking for myself."

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Real talk tho, if the Chainsawman movie is being released by Crunchy in theatres... are we going to have to risk getting AI auto subs? Cuzzzz I'm not paying money for that shit.

Agreed, but at least I feel like if the system's been broken down, we have the opportunity to rebuild it better.
