Ok, ok. The shock has settled down. PayGap.ie is now an award winning website, taking home the Social Impact award from the Analytics Institute. I'm thrilled and humbled, we had an amazing night at the gala, and you could have knocked me over with a feather when they said I'd won it.

Lads. LADS. What is happening?!!

I cannot stress enough that the government didn't announce this unprompted or make updates to their press release. I broke this story by hassling them until they admitted this to me, and then told the Irish Times.

This would have passed by completely unnoticed if I didn't care so much.

On the one hand, it's quite nice to be proved right. On the other hand, that's 6000 companies due to report who now I have to catalogue or else the data is lost forever because the govt., once again, have failed to deliver on a promise...

Government gender pay gap portal to fall short of promises made on International Women’s Day

It is genuinely unbelievable to me that, for all the fanfare that was made in March, the govt. have been absolutely radio silent on this significant change, and probably were hoping it would go completely under the radar, and it's only for me constantly emailing them that anyone even knows about it.

That's how we practice! 😆 We'll be sitting watching tv or something and I'll just randomly call out his phone number, and he'll respond with mine.
zenbuffy.bsky.social
Before then I only had my mum's mobile, her land line, and maybe my two Nana's numbers off, and my mum didn't know I had gone to the hospital because I didn't want to worry her in the middle of the night. The idea of having to ring her forced my husband's number in there 😂 I still practice it though

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?
zenbuffy.bsky.social
I didn't learn my husband's phone number off til I was trapped in a&e during lockdown adjacent times, he wasn't allowed in with me, and my phone battery was going to die. I needed to be able to call him to pick me up!

More on this from me, later today.

(This is the news I found out last week. I was right. No portal this year. Again.)

I really think “We’ve made up a rapist. He doesn’t exist. Why won’t you condemn him?!?” is some of the most bizarre Brass Eye stuff we’ve ever seen

Like, Catherine Connolly isn't perfect and there are valid criticism of her, but instead we have been subjected to some of the most incredible nonsense over the last few weeks instead. Even things with a real basis have been pushed to nonsensical extremes. A mess.

Aposematism is there to warn off predators, not sexual partners. If you're repelled bv it. it's working.

George was just trying to get to work.

ICE pepper-sprayed him, dragged him from his car, locked him in a detention center, and placed him on suicide watch. He even missed his young daughter’s birthday in the process.

This man is a veteran and American citizen. Don't look away.

Committee: "I'm worried that we're running out of ways to ignore women for the Nobel prize"

Wang: "Wait! Have we thought about the machines? What if we give *them* prizes?!"

Committee: "Wang you genius, you've done it. Go home and have your wife make you a sandwich, you deserve it"

Lol the Nobels can't even acknowledge women's contribution to discovery. But sure let's acknowledge The Machines.
Headline from an article in Nature this week that states "Prizes must recognize machine contributions to discovery. The future of science will be written by humans and machines together. Awards should reflect that reality."

There are hundreds of years of history of women’s scientific accomplishments not being recognised or being minimised (“not notable”). It *still* happens. Many female scientists are only acknowledged on Wikipedia thanks to the efforts of, yes, other female scientists, notably physicist Dr Jess Wade.
