Oh yes. Any serious comic's letter-col would tell artists to maintain a 'morgue' of reference images of trees, shoes, etc. I think often of the 1980s Doctor Strange and its swipes from fashion magazines.

What makes this so wild to me, is that they had to pose for this, someone had to snap the picture, then take it to the photo-mat, then wait at least an to be developed, then *pay for that picture*, then use it for one panel in a 4-color comic that would be gone in six months. 🤯 Artists! 💙

According to wikipedia, the Daily American was a family-owned newspaper that served the county, so this was probably local cartoonist making good. And good for them. 🙂 Today the paper is owned by Gannett, because of course.
