PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!!

The University of Texas-Austin is beginning a process to eliminate the Black Studies, Latino Studies, and Gender Studies departments in the College of Liberal Arts. This is a grave threat to the educational liberty of students, faculty, staff, and the people of Texas. 1/

How is it possible that you still refuse to acknowledge the many Palestinian hostages who were also released? Their families feel the same relief when holding them in their arms. Have you considered that some of these prisoners with family in Gaza may have no one to hold them?

"They spread the notion that these frequent insurrections, far from testifying to the unbearable cruelty of slavery, pointed to the innate violence of Black people, a violence that demanded constant vigilance to be kept in check."

Mathelinda Nabugodi, The Trembling Hand
historian Douglas Hamilton notes, in virtually every major rising across the anglophone Caribbean in the so-called Age of Abolition, the Royal Navy was instrumental in protecting and maintaining the colonial elite. Parliamentarians without West India connections grew increasingly resentful of the resources needed to protect the planters from Black insurgency. In response, the pro-slavery lobby ramped up their rhetoric. They spread the notion that these frequent insurrections, far from testifying to the unbearable cruelty of slavery, pointed to the innate violence of Black people, a violence that demanded constant vigilance to be kept in check. Furthermore, they accused abolitionists of inciting such violence with their demands for emancipation. As if it would be a handful of white saviour petitions and pamphlets, and not the gruesome conditions on plantations, that incited rebellion! When Wordsworth cautioned Clarkson that his petitions would excite disturbance among the enslaved, he was directly repeating the pro-slavery arguments of the time. This was a position he would hold on to for the rest of his life.

If you've never been to Gaza, you won't appreciate what the yellow line means. Basically Israel now holds most of Gaza's small but important agricultural land. Continued Israeli occupation, which I judge the likely outcome, makes Gaza even more unliveable and more dependent on outside goods.

My latest is the story of how my community has rallied to protect and defend our neighbors in recent days, as ICE has targeted the Rogers Park neighborhood in Chicago. "This is not a story about a moment of victory, but a moment of being reminded of our power."
They Came for Our Neighbors. We Showed Up.
Before long, there were dozens, and then hundreds of people in the streets, watching and responding.
