Sometimes, the simplest offering to the Ancestors is a clean, clear glass of water.
Yes! They do that spontaneously if no others around. The head bit grows a tail and the tail grows a head, both parts genetically identical.
Not efficient enough. It needs to be a coffin although I do use a lot of cardboard coffins but they are designed to go in swiftly. Trust me, you don’t want it to jam halfway in and ignite. The furnaces are 1,400 plus Fahrenheit.
Because you can’t get a body into a furnace quickly and safely without one.
I have gained some new followers, so I suppose you are wondering why I have gathered you all here today. It’s to show you my natural aquarium! with my fave inhabitants, the immortal hermaphrodite planarians. At the forefront of memory and ageing research. Ah, my boy/girls.
A cremation this morning, after a ceremony on Friday. So many people going for cheaper unattended ‘direct’ cremations, this is the opposite. In the UK, you have the right to go ‘backstage’ and witness the coffin going into the cremator. Few do. A powerful moment.
The importance of ongoing ritual in my professional and personal life.
A crop circle I made at Prawle Point in Devon. I was fascinated with crop circles in the 90’s, but didn’t start making them until 2013. I started to incorporate them into rituals to shed the accumulation of grief I felt as an undertaker. The first chapter of “What Remains..” recounts this practice.
I absolutely agree. Nostalgia for sure, but also a real sense of missed communality.
Smudging the Satyr before the ceremony in KOKO London. Funeral for a much loved sound engineer.
Lunch under the ancient Yew tree at Dartington Hall. I used branches from this to lay on the pyre of a baby.
A presentation I gave to Breaking Convention Psychedelic Convention 2024 about raving, trauma and psychedelia as a spiritual tool for dealing with our mortality, managing our grief and healing at the end of life. Forgive my weakness for always starting with a gag.

To my American friends, here is the beautiful cover of my US hardback. Please buy it, even though you will probably end up on a list..
The marvellous maverick Geordie undertaker and colleague in funeral mischief Carl Marlow’s company. Carl did a pioneering outdoor pyre, and hilariously sells coffins modelled on the Angel of the North, but without wings.

Nigel Farage's attendance record as an MEP was 748 out of 751, yet he turned up to vote AGAINST plans to tackle Russian disinformation. Now one of his MEPs has admitted taking bribes to spread Russian propaganda. Why is this not all over the media?

“We were always terrorists, we were always illegal.

Every Anarchist knows this…Should they wish, at any point, unless you’ve gone to remarkable lengths, you are subject to being disappeared.

State repression is the reality of resistance.”

We were always terrorists, we were always illegal. Whether it’s on the streets, during some occupation, or just sat at home, the weight of the state is always upon us. Every Anarchist knows this; whet...

It wasn’t my loss, I was her undertaker .
