THE SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN'S WIFE • poems • upfromsumdirt

available from @kentuckypress.bsky.social - or (hopefully) everywhere books are sold.
photo of blue hardback book with orangish, goldish illustrations of a mermaid with a leopard on the front. the book sits on a desk with an assortment of stuff on it, lime an orange notebook, a blue sharpie, and a bottle of black.

photo was taken at about 3am. why isnt the poster asleep?!?

write it. it would be amazing!

im inspired by jazz, thus the title... it's always important to be critical of things, but i hope you also have joys & find ways of expressing them that are unchallenged by some. ❤️

Larry Moore at Broadstone Books was a dream (tho much of Teal's wording went unchallenged)...

& nothing but love for the professional staff at Wayne State Univ Press. Jupiter goes underappreciated, imo.

& UPK has been phenomenal (tho they forbade my attempts at copyright infringement!)

i understand the importance of a book budget... i did go waaay over mine this year, but i have no regrets.

I have spent the last of the Book Budget on @upfromsumdirt.bsky.social's new poems.

I am very much looking forward to reading them <3

Michael Scharf at Harry Tankoos Books was an amazing publisher for my 1st collection, Deifying... HTB was extremely choosey about the projects they publish & im forever & deeply grateful for Michael's friendship & insights; i hope other poets get that same opportunity to work with him.

ok... ive tricked 4 different publishers that i admire into printing my work.

so maybe i can get rid of this imposter syndrome now - altho, 2 of the first 3 shoulda received SOME sorta recognition... 😒

i might be an imposter, but i believe in my shit!

"little guy" - when this is my longest collection at 141 pages - some of thats due to its size being less than 6x9, but still. and now i want the next one to be 8x11!

*fat man curtsies*

thank you! ❤️

thank you 😌

despite the cover, it isnt as speculative as the previous collection but i love where it goes...

i got out of bed to write down the frameworks of a poem rattling in my head, but got distracted by older material in the orange journal featured in the photo. & tho i still wanna write something, the urgency for that particular poem has abated somewhat. plus, is my arm breaking out in a rash?!? wtf!

The crossover I needed 😭

it was like drinking fresh cut grass... they had reverted back to roasting very green (the roaster really loved the taste).

i was so disappointed.

wasnt until a few years later, visiting portland oregon, that i had another really great tasting coffee.
upfromsumdirt.bsky.social
when the store changed hands, the new owners went with their own choice of roasters & that was the last time i had a really good cup of coffee in kentucky. months later, a new coffeeshop opened in our neighborhood using our old roasters, so i was very excited & ordered a pour over... but...
upfromsumdirt.bsky.social
but none of our suppliers ever named those products after our store (because they were some suckers!) when they added those items to their retail inventory, despite the fact they would not have existed without us.

and was very popular for them.
upfromsumdirt.bsky.social
we had a similar route with our coffee supplier, who used to own his own coffeeshop before going into roasting. but all of his beans, light or dark, were all too grassy in taste. took us weeks to get what we thought was perfect.
upfromsumdirt.bsky.social
we had the spiciest chai in the state of kentucky, special ordered from our supplier. she'd bring us her idea of "spicy" & we'd send her back to the lab. after about 3 weeks going back & forth, she called herself being a smartass & was "gonna show them" (intending to be too spicy) but it was perfect

wish i had taken more photos of our ever-changing menu board... the "goodnight menu" was one of the 1st... and "chai'challa" was classic (i wish more folks had tried it)
photo of hectic-looking chalkboard featuring menu items at a cafe. the center artwork of it riffs off the "goodnight moon" book and has a cow leaping over the word chai with "goodnight menu" written above. other highlighta include smoothies honoring kentucky writers: "the wendell berry" (obviously), the tropical smoothie, "tropigayl" named for gayl jones, and the green smoothie, "the divine right's sip" named for gurney norman and his book, the divine right's trip. photo of chalk menu board featuring the head of the comicbook hero, the black panther (prince t'challa) with "chai'challa" written above in promotion of our chai latte.
