@aussenminister.diplo.de: My thoughts are especially with the German-Israeli hostages and their families, who since 7 October 2023 have tirelessly raised awareness of the fate of those abducted. To know that for them, two years of fear and uncertainty have come to an end today, is deeply moving. 2/2

Foreign Minister Wadephul @aussenminister.diplo.de: Today is a day of immense relief for the families of the hostages, who can now embrace their loved ones once again. I share in their joy. Yet it is also a day of deep apprehension, for we know that some hostages will not return home alive. 1/2

Chancellor Merz: The hostages who were murdered must also return home, so that their families can give them a dignified farewell. This day is a start: when healing can begin and a step taken on the path to peace in the Middle East. 2/2

Chancellor Merz: Finally. After 738 days, the hostages are returning home – with Germans among them. Behind them lie two years of fear, pain and hope. Today, families can finally once again embrace their loved ones. 1/2

Chancellor Merz on first steps of the agreement between Israel and Hamas:
“The first steps of the agreement between Israel and Hamas are encouraging.

“They offer new hope – for the hostages and their families, for the people in Gaza, and for the entire region. For the first time in a long while, there is a real prospect of peace in the region.

“We call on all parties to keep their promises, end the war, and pave the way for lasting peace. Germany will continue to firmly support this process.”
