I kept some of the old Carmen Sandiego reference books from the Apple II era there on the desk so I can read through entries in those while I waited for the WC3 missions to load! :D

On the space flight sim side, I remember going from the nice looking (albeit limited) pixel art in Wing Commander 1/2 to the 3d models of Wing Commander 3, and they were a major downgrade -- and the performance was horrible. 5 minutes to load a mission.

There was definitely that watershed "changing of the guard" moment where EVERYTHING in computer gaming (from software to media) absolutely leaned into 3d graphics as a selling point, even when it was a horrible idea because the tech was just not there yet.

The MOO1 ones in particular were very good, yes! Especially considering it was from the era where conserving space was still important.

I kind of thing the advent of CD-ROMs and the lifting of the file size limitations led to a lot of sloppier coding and less innovation overall in that respect.

The animated talking heads from that era are really pretty charming. That video reminded me of the advisors from Alien Legacy, and really that style was much better than the early 3D talking heads like you'd later see in Fallout. Kudos to the artists involved during that era!
