“From the very first days of the Trump administration, when Trump and his allies attacked Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde,” @guthriegf.bsky.social continues, “they have made clear that religious liberty does not extend to their perceived enemies.“

“This is not merely a confrontation over crowd control, immigration policy or policing tactics — it’s a deeper assault on faith-based dissent. The government’s response implicitly says that if faith communities protest, they will not be treated as legitimate religious actors.”

A brutal attack on a pastor outside an ICE processing center tells us all we need to know about the administration's regard for religious freedom and protection.

Father Larry Dowling dropped the most damning statement I think I've ever seen from a catholic on this whole situation (save for the Pope's words on it):
A quote from Father Larry Dowling's post about being denied access to detainees. It reads "No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ."

ICE is “kidnapping American citizens, kidnapping people that are here legally, abusing people because of the color of their skin. It’s disgusting.”

We have armed secret police kidnapping people off the street based on the color of their skin.

When we win: we will haul them before a Senate committee. The masks will come off. There will be consequences.

Every democrat should be talking like this. Not the feckless mueller time version of this that we’ve had for years, but actual promises of actual consequences

As long as it goes unpunished we’ll never be free of this

WIC, which helps feed babies and new moms, is facing critical funding issues.

But ICE’s mass deportation operation—which has attacked faith leaders in Chicago—is raging on uninterrupted during the GOP shutdown. “We could hear them laughing as they were shooting us,” said Rev. Black.

Priorities.

"While new moms worry about formula for their infants and furloughed federal workers stress about next month’s rent or mortgage, the administration’s mass deportation obsession will continue uninterrupted," writes @tusk81.bsky.social

This says everything about this administration’s priorities.

It’s really important that this story is in People magazine. It’s really important that this representation of ICE violence against a clergy person is in a very “mainstream” outlet that reaches people who may not consume political media.

For those not fluent in Catholic: refusing the Monstrance is not denying prisoners the Eucharist, it is refusing Christ himself, since Christ is present in the Monstrance.
