🧵 A chance comment in a post has led me down a rabbit warren of Interactive Fiction memories, floppy diskettes, and apps on modern devices.

So this is going to be an ongoing thread about text adventure games, such as these “Lost Treasures of Infocom”.

my thought process right now is

One podcast I listened to likened this to Assassin’s Creed, which caught my ear. Then another podcast suggested I didn’t need to have played the first game, which further caught my attention.

So I’ll be reading this review with interest!

I was thinking, “I don’t remember that one.” Turns out that I came on board in August/September 2024 - I’m not seeing any red ’watched’ bars before this time period.

One day I’ll go back in time, but it’s hard enough keeping up with real time at the moment 😅

I love seeing other people’s shelves to see how they do it! 🥸

I rewatched all of the Rocky films a few years ago, but I didn’t realise there was a connection to this fight.

So I just went and watched a highlights real on YT to better understand this 🧵 Great background, thanks!

😳 One of my leftie podcasts recently opened with an apology about running similar ads. ISTR that it was included in a general category they couldn’t block, or something like that 😬

🔊 The one in which the hosts manage to link Baby Bell 🧀, Stranger Things 📺, Bon Jovi 🎶, and 🐍💦 together in their wild cold open segment! Awoogo!!! 🤭

My 15yo child, unexpectedly: “Yeah, I have at least 3 LinkedIn accounts. All fake. I use them to check on my teachers’ qualifications. I keep getting job offers because I ticked something that said I used to work in middle management for Asda.”

I knowingly heard my first just a few months ago when a favourite drummer of mine from a well known/long running prog rock band got ambushed and had to play to one of their songs 😅

As a child/teen I used to answer the ☎️ by reciting the number.

Nowadays I don’t even bother to answer the phone anymore 🫤

It seems that it rook me a while to get into it, way back in 2017!
I'm really not sure how I feel about this book. It took me until about page 300, 3/5ths of the way through, before I had a handle on the setting, the characters, and the plot. Until then it was a bit of a struggle if I'm honest. I think mainly because I was having trouble parsing all the characters and factions apart.

Then Jaidee becomes more significant and, finally, we're off and running. At that point I was in and willing to finish it. Before that I had considered abandoning the book

“The Micro User” magazine? I remember that. I thought I still had a collection in my loft, but I haven’t located them yet if they indeed still exist up there.

Oh yeah, the soap opera connection is absolutely where I get the characters item from.

I‘ve probably veered towards ‘large cast of characters’ over ‘big scope’, hence perhaps why I‘ve not linked in travel. Maybe!

“Space Opera“ are two words that are guaranteed to raise my interest though 🤓

📺 Watching a #BookTube episode from Johanna Reads that mentions “Mockingbird” by Walter Tevis in the @gollancz.bsky.social SF Masterworks series.

I hadn’t heard of it before, so I’ve just been looking up a list of black/yellow spined books.

I’ve a v.small collection.

I’ve often tried to define SO in my own mind.

Opera always suggests characters to me. The space implying ‘mostly in space’.

I’ve not actually considered travel to be an essential component though 🤔

I do think I read too much adventure. The #StoryGraph agrees 👇

What spawned your own definition?
Mainly reads fiction books that are adventurous, dark, and mysterious. Typically chooses medium-paced books that are 300-499 pages long.

📖 Reading a book has me wondering how authors approach writing uncomfortable scenes?

Much won’t come from lived experience so won’t necessarily be ‘writing what they know’.

E.g. I’m not a horror boy so torture scenes are really uncomfortable. This book has a few challenging topics!

I think mine was a SNES with a Mario, though I don’t recall which one 🤔 I’m thinking “World”, maybe.

I love that an article about “Commando” has led to me looking up two new things - Code Dojo/Club and now this Scratch!

😁

Thx, chaps.
tuftymctavish.com
I looked up this CoderDojo that you mentioned.

Turns out there are some clubs local to me too, though they’re either private or inactive by the looks of them.

Still, I had no idea, was curious enough to look.

Oh! I have that book! Here’s a handy picture I already have in my camera roll.

Funnily enough I was reviewing your Sources list wondering if that was the one, as it drew my eye the most.

You certainly do a wide range of reading for your articles.

That is very cool 🤩 I must confess that I spent way more hours on “Chuckie Egg” than “Commando”. I did not know of this connection before reading this article.

“Good egg” 😆
