if I can't hallucinate a compelling character, the writing has to hold up to a LOT more scrutiny to provide one, and the hero system is already falling back on a compromise to get the best ratio it can on gameplay obstruction vs character presence

heroes (in the sense of like, mobas, not just the concept of having a premade character) make sense as a concept in a lot of games, and make sense from a development point of view in even more cases, but they just completely kill my interest in rpgs

Remember: You can't force a site or service to treat minors differently than adults without requiring EVERY USER to establish whether they're an adult. Which is, inherently, a deanonymization mandate, because to verify age, you must verify identity.
