I feel the average style/implementation in that niche (and trad games in general) is a world away and extremely colored by War on Drugs perspective. Wild addiction risks, disproportionate penalties, and things like that are par for the course there.

Also, there's a few movies she's been in (especially horror) that make me feel badly how Dakota Johnson gets hazed. Like, with a decent script/director, she's pretty rocking. Even easy to forget who she is sometimes (in the positive sense). I can't put the bad movies on her, except as bad picks.

That's part of what comes to mind for me! You can walk into an average suburban Walmart or Target and grab a weed or drinking game right off the shelf, even in more uptight areas.

There's also lots of good tropes to play with, for example consumption-as-necessity. Like where use of alcohol or particular drug can allow perception of hidden things/worlds, provide immunity from aliens or monsters, suppress only semi-controllable powers, etc.

My immediate top thought about your question is that there's a lot of room to play with presentations and perceptions. It's even possible in solo via focus/distraction prompts and flashback/retcon mechanics. But more or less put on rose-tinted glasses or smear vaseline on the lens. Clarity later.

Think on par, just not that deep. Big slice of TTRPGs is adapting tropes & vibes of other media. Tons of cannabis, alcohol, drug themed media to riff on. Games too (weed and drinking games are even findable right off the shelf at Walmart and Target).

But that's still an interesting query!

While this is an interesting thought experiment, I think the larger question is 'what would it mean to do a ttrpg that is themed around intoxication or altered states' - how do you present that? "D&D but Weed Themed" is clearly not enough. What makes this niche a natural fit? What stories are these?

Once I looked, seriously wild how few alcohol, cannabis, drug themed games there are in the TTRPG niche. So few as to be statistically zero. Sooo... imma set up a "holiday indulgence" jam to run through New Year or something, one in march ending 4/20 for 4/20 next year. Gotta fill the gap!

TTRPGs as a niche have such a weird puritan streak. In recent years we've gotten a solid handful of games for romance and sexy themes (and a real solid pile of queer themed games). But we're still barely nibbling at edges. Really weird how few cannabis or alcohol themed games there are.

When I worked in restaurants, I drank (and other things) HARD. And if I still worked in them, I'd almost certainly be a severe alcoholic at this point (despite having really good resistance to physical addiction overall), if alive.

On a fully srs note for a sec, there's a whole damn societal conversation that needs to happen about the drug and alcohol abuse rates among service workers (and the sheer destructive hell that it is the tip of the iceberg of).

For real, I knew the TTRPG niche was a bit puritan but it's truly mindblowing for me just how nearly non-existent the whole cannabis/drug/alcohol theme umbrella is. I mean, even Walmart has weed and drinking games...
