Herb Pennock (241-162, 3.60 ERA, 1,227 strikeouts), of the Athletics, Red Sox, and Yankees, one of the greatest southpaws ever, died of a brain hemorrhage on January 30, 1948. He was just 53. Later that year, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Few managers won as consistently as Billy Southworth, who was born #OTD in 1893.

From 1941-45, his @cardinals.com teams averaged 101 wins per season while capturing three NL pennants and two World Series titles.

"From June 6 to July 30, 1968, Bob Gibson pitched eleven straight complete games, giving up only three runs. Gibson pitched eight shut-outs in that string."

Simply phenomenal at that time, and unheard of today.

On August 5, 1926--99years ago today--the STL Cardinals beat the Brooklyn Robins 11-9. Billy Southworth went 3-5 with 4 RBIs. Pete Alexander got the save. Southworth and Alexander--both acquired mid-season--would lead the Cardinals to the NL pennant. www.nebraskapress.unl.edu/nebraska/978...

I spent some time on a great baseball podcast talking about the Satchel Paige Project. My segment is 59 minutes in, though Meg and Ben are always a great listen. This was fun—I could talk about Paige every day if you insist.

Ichiro Suzuki had 126 hits in a 63-game span of 2004. Yes, that's an average of 2 hits per game for over 2 months.

No one else has ever done that in baseball history.

From @theathletic.com: When Ichiro Suzuki is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday, it will culminate one of the most trailblazing and fascinating careers in Major League Baseball. Here are our four favorite lessons from his career. https://trib.al/az0DrfZ
Ichiro Suzuki, former Seattle Mariners right fielder, in a white baseball uniform on a field, adjusts his cap. A quote reads: "He was one of the most eccentric players in the history of the game — talented, mesmerizing, focused and disciplined. There was only one Ichiro." The attribution reads: "Rustin Dodd, a senior writer for Peak"

In two days, one of my favorite ballplayers of all time goes into the @baseballhall.org. We all know that Ichiro had as many tools as the game allowed. So let’s also take a moment to appreciate another of his tremendous talents: acting.
