Hi folk - if you now follow me as a result of one of the starter packs, I mostly post about;

- politics (of the lefty/soc dem variety)

-ocassionally on other interests (daily life, books/video games, or whatever else you'd expect from an Irish guy in his late 20's).

Take that as you will.

I will stress that I don't think any criticism is a smear, but if you are going to just outright lie about whether she has condemned Russia (which she has repeatedly on record), or was breaking rules in signing in staff whilst vetting was ongoing (which she wasn't), then yeah, I can't respect that.

The reality is that Connolly holds those countries that FG frames as our Allies to the same standards we set for other countries. Which is what Michael D has been doing already.

Definitely looking forward to the end of this campaign, and electing Catherine Connolly as President.

Michael D. Higgins literally called for Israel to be expelled from the UN, and for a UN military intervention to bring aid into Gaza.

The world did not collapse in on itself - so yeah, sorry if I don't quite buy the idea that Connolly poises some exceptional threat to our foreign relations.

Re: Connolly and the "smear" campaign - at the point where FG's main attack lines are as disingenuous as pretending to not know how Barristers work in this country, or just lying about her views or about how Dáil staff recruitment works, it doesn't say much for them, does it?

scarlet for the supposedly serious politicians thumping their chests because Elijah Burke got kicked out of a meeting for refusing to follow the standing orders

So just to clear up this week we've learned the following things are threats to democracy:

- Pleading not guilty in court
- The Bar's professional ethical standards
- Criticising the media
- Voting No on a referendum
- Paul Murphy

Political discourse in this country is a complete mess right now

Wow, we have to wonder how FG has never won a Presidential election before.😅

This prediction is from 2023:

“You know, in a couple of years’ time people will be able to resolve this issue themselves, in relation to whether they want a silent person, a puppet, or whether they want a president.”

- President Michael D. Higgins, 2023.

Fair, the "from the top of my head" bit wasn't rethorical, but yeah, that is another dxample as well.

Personally, these seems far more interesting than "Connolly followed her professional obligations as a Barrister" or "Connolly actually takes prisoner rehabilitation seriously", which are apparently grave crimes Connolly must answer for somehow.

From the top of my head, Humphreys has been implicated in interfering getting an animal cruelty case dropped, defended practices enabling bogus self-employment, proposed a Green Paper on Disability reform clearly inspired by similar "reforms" by the Tories in the UK...and more besides.
thomascreamer.bsky.social
On the Inside Politics podcast, Ellen Coyne explained the disproportionate media stories about Catherine Connolly compared to Heather Humphreys as a case of Connolly just being a more "interesting" candidate with Humphreys not doing much that is worthy of comment?

Really? Seems a bit weak tbh.

Hi folk - just a PSA that today is the LAST day for checking and fixing your voter registration if you wish to vote on 24th October in the Presidential Election. Just head to checktheregister.ie - it'll only take a few minutes to see if your voter registration is up to snuff.

Honestly, would it kill FFers, when they're expressing sympathy for Jim Gavin, to even pretend to extend that sympathy to the tenant that their presidential candidate ripped off?

Absolutely vile.

Not that I want to overload the fine people at @booksupstairs.bsky.social with work at this fraught moment, but consider sending some business their way to show support.

And tbf, it is possible that maybe he knew that *more* would come out, and he decided to quit while he was ahead?

Of all Jim Gavin’s gaffes, it turns out it was his spare one that took him down.

Not saying that being a Landlord, especially a shitty one, harms a politician as much as it should - but in this case, he could have tried arguing the toss about whether it is right to say Gavin "stole" €3.3k from the tenant, but that was never going to be winnable in the public areana.
thomascreamer.bsky.social
I mean, wasn't that kind of what killed Deirdre Conroy's candidacy in the DBS bye-election a few years ago?
thomascreamer.bsky.social
What I will be curious about is how many will still vote for Jim Gavin on the ballot paper on the 24th?

Because it will definitely be more than zero.
thomascreamer.bsky.social
Yeah, but landlords are a single digit percentage of the population, and even then, basically pocketing thousands of someone else's money is not something you can openly condone in nearly any social context in Ireland.
