I spent too much time talking at the party last night, but I think the one good idea I had was how if you're an expert, using a chatbot to write your opinion is forfeiting any power or influence you might have.

You've ceded your predilections to those of the machine.
people are very bad at science policy because it's hard and lots of money is invested in no one learning it.

every science news article is like "chinese researchers invent cure for hurting your back getting out of bed" and every science policy news article is like "uncomfortable bed lobby successfully lobbies trump admin with $500 bribe"
Borderlands - Torgue gets this mention for staying true to its brand and that brand is EXPLOSIONS.

oh so this happened RIIIGHT after I went through, then.
Last night, I was trying to talk about a WAY in which books can be poorly written with my two friends (both of whom are English Majors, one with a Ph.D. in English), and it took my non-doctor friend a beat to understand that I was reflecting on a particular inadequacy not just saying "books bad"
This makes sense. I think MOST of us who were "anecdotal evidence for whole-word" had like learned phonics first and then chased cool pictures into cooler books and had to whole-word through.
I would argue the important literary skills of analysis are tricky to use and implement even in for adults regardless of which pedagogy they were brought up in (watch your parents swallow an NYT OP ed piece like it's truth, for example).
There may be some controversy over Critical Reading's use in teaching young kids, but good god, when you look for references on Critical reading, they're in the 2010's but when you look for debate about Whole Word vs Phonics, IT'S FROM THE '90s.

LADY LIKE A WHOLE FUCKING LOT HAPPENED IN BETWEEN.
I came to really UNDERSTAND close reading when reading first hand accounts and journals of people because "oh because the curtains were blue" didn't apply. You were trying to suss out the intentions of the author.
I have a pet theory IN LINE with Critical Literacy which is that when it comes time to teach someone to engage with a text, I think historical primary sources CAN BE a really cool way to do so.
Does it sound like we have a literacy problem in the US at least? Yeah, seems like.

Is it probably a really gnarly confounding of factors? Yes.
Nope the more I listen to this video, the more I want to write a comment which absolutely the wrong thing to do, don't waste your time Lucy.

I'm done. Good god.
