Since I have to reintroduce myself after the move:

I’m Kat. California biologist, currently in Davis. Herpetologist. 15 years in private consulting (utility and infrastructure), mostly as a field nerd, doing surveys for local flora/fauna and passing on whatever niche wisdom I can.

NorCal peoples! As of last night there are a few spots open in a Foothill Yellow-legged Frog Workshop in Sonoma. Jeff is a great instructor and it’s always worth it if you’re looking to get into more herp work! #herps

For the #Reflections theme for #BirdOfTheDay a Northern Shoveler. Not a perfect reflection, but I love the leopard-skin pattern on the water. 🐆

I'm fine with Bluesky being the last hurrah of social media but clearly the bubble has burst. This should be at the top of everyone's feed, but it's crickets.

A tumblr post that reads "WHo would have believed that the perfect wikipedia photo caption could have been improved upon?" Two identical images are then side by side. The first caption is "Piper Kerr, a member of the Scottis National Antarctix Expedition, plays the bagpipes for an indifferent penguin, March 1904". The Caption for the image on the left reads, "Piper Kerr (right), a member of the Scottis National Antarctix Expedition, plays the bagpipes for an indifferent penguin, March 1904"

The frilled lizard is an iconic Australian reptile because of their utter fearlessness.

Their scientific name, Chlamydosaurus kingii, translates to 'King cloaked lizard' & you can see why.

They're one of a few modern lizards that can accurately be called bipedal, running upright on hind legs.

Good news: a grant I submitted got selected for an interview out of ~150 apps. Only 2 others got interviews!

Bad news: @skypeascientist.bsky.social was not selected in the end 😞

I will keep trying.

In the meantime, consider supporting our work with $5-10/month?

“Since the 1970s, when California’s green turtles first surfaced, scientists have suspected that the animals represent an expansion of the species’ known range… these suspicions are almost definitely true.”

Because I still find people who don't know how the story ends:

Christopher Columbus was returned to Spain in chains in 1500 AD, convicted of barbaric torture of colonists, but released 6 weeks later by order of King Ferdinand II.

Neither he nor his brothers ever governed a Spanish holding again.
Christopher Columbus awaits sentencing in jail.

Recognition of #IndigenousPeoplesDay is about the truthtelling of history and the realities of colonization. Don’t allow them to sweep these realities under the rug to create a new narrative.
