Fern and I will pick up the last of the spuds for the year. Have to wait for fall for the local ones (not baby spuds, that is different). I should do a thread on local food and how to find, wholesale/retail/aggregators/setting up mutual aid boxes, etc.
I was gifted two of these last year and finally had the nerve to take it out and use it. Messy, but fun. I have absolute loads of these now.
Had a fun new to me crafty activity this afternoon. Gelli printing using random acrylic paint in craft box and maple leaves from Fern’s PM walk.
Grey and black tones. A silhouette of a maple leaf in black. Red amber background with a maple leaf imprint with that white negative background. Black and green background. A print of a leaf with some negative white. The veins are shown.

I wrote a story that pubbed today about the illegal, dangerous, and damaging activity happening in Yosemite while the park is left open but half-staffed due to the gov shutdown. I was surprised when the DOI asked me to issue a correction. They've also called for retractions from other publications.

Question for the hivemind: is there a tool that takes protein sequences and predicts antibodies (for a western blot) that might work? We have a pretty divergent protein derived from a retrovirus and I'm wondering if there might be an antibody from another species that will work on it.
Needed some off computer and out of my own head time. No Fern this time. She had a walk this morning.
Sunny sky, no clouds. An access road with stone dust. Trees in various stages of autumn colors.

A black swan at Stratford-Upon-Avon named Mr. Terminator was a local favorite and "more popular" than Shakespeare, despite being a visiting species native to Australia. But then he started trying to drown the local mute swans, earning himself a one-way ticket to a home for wayward waterfowl in Devon

NEW: The government does not track how often immigration agents grab citizens. So ProPublica did.

We found more than 170 such incidents since the start of the second Trump administration. Our tally — almost certainly incomplete — includes nearly 20 children, two of whom have cancer.

I will never forget my Jetta saying ‘[insert name] I don’t understand you…’ and me yelling ‘nobody does.’ Daughter looked at me with that teen judgy side eye.

Totally don’t want this. Linux it will be I guess until they fuck that up too.
I don’t like talking to humans IRL, why would I want a computer talking to me? Dammit.

The end of free Windows 10 support this Wednesday could be an environmental disaster, cutting off 400 million PCs from security updates and dooming millions of still usable computers.

Trump's mechanism to pay the troops during the shutdown is by far the most illegal budgetary action he's taken as POTUS, potentially setting the stage to break everything.

It's also needless because Congress would easily pass a troop pay bill if Johnson were willing to gavel in.

Long thread.

“I've had two children with dyslexia, and we've had to struggle to find places that would help them, and we've had really good outcomes when we actually got the help that we needed,” said Mississippi House Education Committee Chair Rob Roberson.
