Depressing though it is, I agree with Isabelle. If your ostensible allies remain apathetic and silent about something as horrific as v-coding, so apathetic even that they can't be bothered to find out what the term means... well... what it tells you is that you don't actually have allies

I try to convince myself that we have cis allies and then I watch the completely apathetic reaction of every cis person, even the otherwise good ones, to the fact of V-coding, and that conviction shatters under the weight of the truth

Just reading those words, while I'm not remotely surprised (and I've heard similar things uttered from the lips of family members and former friends who KNEW I was trans) sickens me to the core.

So that's where we are in Australia. Everybody knows what she means here. She means that trans women get raped with government approval. That's how they "deal with us" in men's prisons.

i have to admit that finally being able to host my account on blacksky infrastructure (while keeping my original handle so as to not misrepresent who i am) has made me feel a little safer on this ghastly network. i don't think i realised until now how deeply angry i am toward bluesky as a company.

For someone who was REALLY EXCITED when the earliest iterations of this technology were unveiled, I can't believe how repulsive and detestable I find these corporations and this technology. I knew about all the dystopian possibilities, but I just never imagined people would willingly embrace them.

Oh good, ChatGPT is getting "erotica for verified adults" later this year

We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

(There are almost always cultural challenges involved - they've usually transferred from another academic culture, either from outside of Australia or from a more vocationally-oriented university in Australia. It's really something we need to do MORE to scaffold!)
