‘Intersected’. The torturous language to avoid calling corruption, corruption

President Trump's personal business and his government role intersected when he was heard on a hot mic arranging a meeting between his son Eric, who runs the family company, and Indonesia’s leader.
‘I’ll Have Eric Call’: Trump Sets Up Son’s Meeting With Indonesian President
A hot-mic moment suggested a blurry line between the U.S. president’s roles as political leader and businessman.

Minor gripe - why use an illustration representing Shakespeare's R&J when Cyrano de Bergerac is the obvious literary parallel?

Would have been really tempting when younger; I've never been great at reading emotions/moods and a translator would have seemed like a godsend. Used to try and match conversation patterns against books I'd read. (No, still not formally diagnosed.)

Yes your taxes should support disabled people.

They should support homeless people.

They should support those living in poverty, children and the elderly.

This is literally the purpose of taxes, and I would far rather support those who need it than continue to enrich the elite.

As is always correct and in accordance with all the laws of the internet, I just watched Tom Holland's epic Lip Sync Battle performance, and now I am sharing it with all of you so you can do the same.

For context; 30 years ago my scout troop in Sussex was one of the first to go mixed. One of the first Qs we considered was, paraphrased, "can everyone access a toilet because otherwise we're being exclusive." It's fundamental.

Business idea: renting fitness equipment (static bike, sitting rower etc) for people who are rehabbing after an injury, with a monthly cost. Offer a discount on purchase after x months. Referrals through physios.

“Such a zero-sum approach risks certain inferences being drawn from the UK supreme court judgment that could lead to widespread exclusion of trans people from many public spaces."

"No shit Sherlock" seems inadequate. This is a feature of the guidance, not a bug.

I have started arguments with beloved friends when they find out I wrote in the margins of my books. My opinions were changed when I read Anne Fadiman's superb _Ex Libris_.

Worth noting that there's no formal requirement that a teacher of English has A-level English at any specific grade, or at all. The head just has to be confident they can teach to the standard.

My immediate thought was the Mjolnir moment in _Endgame_. A friend years ago told me that trying to read Shakespeare plays was like enjoying music by reading the lyrics.

Got to the local gym today and feel *so* much better for half an hour on a static bike and a few sets on the machines (legs only, I'm scared of my physio).

Not quite sure how I turned from the last kid picked for every single sports team throughout school, to feeling twitchy due to lack of exercise (I may have temporarily wrecked my shoulder).

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Thank you. It's already improving, and the important bit is that I should regain full function. Didn't realize it would take longer than a broken bone!

Boo. In a sling, no running or driving, until December. I strongly recommend not dislocating your AC joint (collarbones shouldn't look like that)

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.
