The Bastion
An anchor of civilization in this benighted land

Long lost arts gave birth to this edifice. A great pyramid of crystalline glass, it reaches into the dark sky but falls far short of the cyclopean cliffs that surround the valley. Inside the shining walls dwells the greatest portion of Humanity.

Some property of the walls channels and reflects the brilliance of the Lighthouses. Seven great walls ablaze in the night.

Variant Rules: Backpack Management

Track your inventory through pictures you draw yourself

Instead of keeping track of how much your character can carry in the normal fashion, every Player draws out or is given a 12-by-12 grid of squares. For each +1 STRENGTH a character has, add another 12 square column to one side of the grid. For each +1 AGILITY add 1 row to the bottom.

Items take up space. The Game Runner or the rules will tell you how many spaces an item occupies. The Player must draw items into their inventory. Don’t worry if you’re not an artist, it’s about holding as many shivs and bandages as you can not how pretty they look.

Characters can still hold things in their hands

Takes up no space in your inventory
Provides a 4*5 inventory grid

The giant faces mark the flood anchors. Twelve stone heads half-buried across the old territories, their mouths gaping doorways into the earth’s deep, wet places. BARTA knows them all. He’s walked the circuit for centuries.

Once a year he visits Kess. He whispers to her, tells her how the villages grow, how fat the children are, how the bridges still stand. How the world she built by betraying Glopstepalof continues, indifferent to her sacrifice. Then he describes the cracks spreading through the foundations of the bridges, the way water pools where it shouldn’t. How the old channels remember their original purpose.

The cross he carries is iron, seven feet tall, inscribed with depth markers. He drives it into the earth at each giant face, reads the water table. Of the twelve anchors the giants build, nine have begun to fail. When all twelve crumble, the old channels will reverse and the world will remember what it was to drown.

Long after the SUN went dark, Humanity lit their own stars to stave off the night. Six places of power were chosen ringing the last valley where life persisted. Six towers were erected using the art of a dying people. Six points of Brightness in this Benighted Land.

6 Lighthouses against the Night

They bind the last valley in a web of light.Their beams cross this benighted land like a web of safety. Reassurance to those who dwell in the binding. And a source of dread.

Just beyond each Lighthouse is a Shadow. Something massive and vague waiting in the Night. Lighthouses occasionally dim. Should they ever go out, what waits beyond will be unbound.

The Scale Steps
Massive scales of something like-, but which is not, shale. Patinaed rust red

What is in the HEX (d6)
1 the scales here broke off years ago, retrace your steps or repel down a shear wall at AGILITY DR16
2 fossilized barnacles cling to the scales here providing better footing and catching what falls from above, add 1 when searching among the scales
3 a small community of something sprung up here in better times, only hollow buildings remain, empty shells of the past, add 1 when searching among the scales and to what searches for you
4 rust lays thick on the not-rock here, subtract 1 when searching across the scales
5 the sound of trickling water leads you to a natural spring
6 the broken bones of a fallen dagger
Like some massive mushroom growing on a tree they protrude from the side of a near sheer decline

Searching across the scales you find d6
1 The scale you stand on snaps off the crevice edge. TEST AGILITY DR8 to avoid a deadly plummet
2-3 Rust and flaking scales that stick to your clothes and cling to your skin
4 Fresh water seeps out of the crevice wall and pools in a rust contaminated hollow. Drink from the rusted pool, TEST TOUGHNESS DR10 or be infected. Slowly collect fresh water from the seep, roll an additional time to see what searches for you
5 Scales that have crashed down from above and the corpse of a traveller that fell with them. The traveller’s equipment is intact and they certainly don’t need it
6 Rust flakes off revealing golden scales beneath. Gather 2d6 that are each worth 2s
7 Earth Current sparks from the wall, raw and powerful. You can fill any empty Canisters you carry and monsters will not approach this HEX

What searches for you along the scales? d6
1-3 Nothing but the breeze
4-5 A swarm of mites. Escape them with a DR10 AGILITY TEST or by sacrificing a day worth of food, otherwise take 2d2 damage that bypasses armour
6+ A horror of these benighted lands. You spot it in the HEX below but it spots you and begins to climb
