As below, one can use the GWP* method to give an indicative view of the crucial importance to New Zealand minimal fair share action of early, deep and sustained methane mitigation (in addition to net zero to net -ve CO2e for CO2+N2O).
Chart showing an indicative GWP* method warming analysis (cumulative CO2we from 2015 to 2100) illustrating the crucial importance to New Zealand minimal fair share action of early, deep and sustained methane mitigation (in addition to net zero to net -ve CO2e for CO2+N2O).

Chart shows horizontal brown dotted line for a New Zealand population share (via global equal per capita) of remaining warming to 1.5ºC. Note, this is minimally equitable at best.
- Blue lines show different agri methane scenarios, all cutting -10% by 2030, and then to -14%. -24%, -35% or -47% by 2050.
- CO2 and N2O to net zero CO2e/yr by 2050.
- Red lines show total GHG warming for each agri methane scenario.

GWP* indicates forcing, whereas the associated warming commitment shown lags by 10 to 20 years. Therefore, although the GHG for -35% Ag CH4 scenario does just reach the 1.5ºC level by 2100 in the chart, earlier mitigation would be required.

As shown the "climate neutral: -14% Ag CH4 scenario merely stabilises New Zealand's temperature contribution in permanent substantial overshoot of the 1.5ºC goal.
swimsure.bsky.social
The "scientific report" underpinning this New Zealand decision is a travesty.
-Makes false assumption p.28 that limiting to 1.5ºC global warming can be achieved via merely reaching climate neutrality ('no additional warming').
-And allows 1.5ºC failure scenarios.

This is a great, detailed piece of work. There is really no secret here: OpenAI fully intend to use fossil gas to power their data centres.

All the crap about fusion, dyson spheres etc is misdirection. This is what they're *actually* doing:

John McCarrick, the company’s new head of Global Energy Policy, was a senior energy policy advisor in the first Trump administration’s Bureau of Energy Resources in the Department of State while under former Secretaries of State Rex Tillerson and Mike Pompeo.

As deputy assistant secretary for Energy Transformation and the special envoy for International Energy Affairs, McCarrick promoted exports of American liquefied natural gas to Europe in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and advocated for Asian countries to invest in natural gas.

The choice to hire McCarrick matches the intentions of OpenAI’s Trump-donating CEO Sam Altman, who said in a U.S. Senate hearing in May that “in the short term, I think [the future of powering AI] probably looks like more natural gas.”

It also aligns with the company’s early moves toward powering new data centers, huge warehouses full of linked-up computers that require enormous quantities of water and electricity, to run with gas. OpenAI’s U.S. Stargate Project site in Texas, which is slated to become one of the largest data center sites in the world, is already installing off-grid gas turbines to power its operations.

“Big Tech’s collusion with the Trump administration’s fossil fuel agenda for artificial intelligence is evident in their massive investment in methane gas power infrastructure — as well as pro-gas political operatives like McCarrick,” Tyson Slocum, director of consumer advocacy organization Public Citizen’s Energy Program, said.

The “solution” of powering AI with gas is part of Trump’s AI energy policy platform. In a July speech to announce a $96 billion AI and energy funding package, Trump lauded fossil fuel and coal-powered data center development while flanked by oil and gas executives.

YES, grid-tied solar PV battery systems in Ireland CAN be installed with an isolation switch so they can be operated off-grid in case of storms or other outages.

Safe Electric: "off-grid backup systems can be installed as long as it is done safely by a registered contractor."

New Zealand's agri methane Government decision betrays its Paris Agreement global commitments to limiting global warming equitably.

It says, the short-term profits of NZ agri-food corporations are far more important to them than national promises to protect the future wellbeing of people & nature.

NZ Govt decision to reduce the agriculture methane target ignores the science & will just add to cooking the planet & makes farming even more affected by extreme weather events. This is a lose-lose decision for the planet & NZ. #methanecookstheplanet #ClimateEmergency www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

The government is lowering its biogenic methane target for the next 25 years, a move opposed by the Greens and environmental activists.

To be clear: corporations are *agents* - they have agency to act in the world, over and above the agency of their constituent human components. But they are not sentient, and have no *moral* agency beyond what is built in by design. In the case of for-profit corps it is actively *omitted* by design.

Disappointingly, "growth is good" was the core message in the lead-off keynote (economist) overview at the @seai-ie.bsky.social research conference yesterday. Along with following panel, it was as if Paris & carbon budgets & sectoral ceilings had never happened.
O/w the research presented was good.

Class 1 e-bikes, which require pedaling and have electric assist that tops out at 18mph, are very different than throttle-operated class 2 and 3 bikes, which are themselves very different from the bigger, faster electric motorcycles that are proliferating under the “ebike” label.

My unpopular urbanist opinion is that big, hyperfast two-wheelers are a menace and should be banned from bike lanes/paths (with enforcement).

These things endanger everyone riding a bike or legal e-bike. Worse, they deter some from even trying.
E-bikes have evolved into e-motorcycles. Law enforcement is lagging behind.
Serious injuries are on the rise in emergency rooms around the country, as electric cycles become bigger and faster. Lawmakers and police departments are scrambling to address the problem.

For sure! Even so, getting past wrongly equating AI Mode with genAI was a still mental block that kept me from looking at it 🙄
I hadn't realised that it could integrate our usage, battery in/out with low cost night grid, and solar forecast.
Or, as surprisingly, how it would solve for these.
Sigen AI Mode screenshot of Production & Consumption Forecast (kW) for load consumed, PV solar produced, sell battery to grid, and charge battery from grid.
