one interesting thing is the collapse of mass support for trump before he took office. his in-person events were sparsely attended. his conventional fundraising (donations in the dollar to thousand dollar range) was more or less nonexistent.

Trump I was a grassroots phenomenon. Trump II was elite.

Could not be clearer that we’re in a moment of almost universal elite rebellion against any kind of restriction or limit. You saw this shift in all the rhetoric too; Trump I was all about the little guy but everyone dropped that and started talking about grindset and being “aristocratic.”

I also think the problem is deep

One thing you notice quickly if you watch MLS youth academy teams is that the players are big and strong. That’s the type being favored and it’s not a recipe for creating players on the caliber of Euro leagues. Big and strong kids will win games today tho!

Maybe! But myself and others I know used to at least watch a lot of games on TV when access was greater. The Apple deal limited access and I wasn’t going to get a sub, nor did most people I know. One example of how they aren’t building long term.

This will be a tiny footnote in Messi’s career and is further proof that a star here and there can’t save a league. MLS can’t get out of its own way. America is filled with soccer fans and very few care about MLS and MLS has no idea how to fix that problem.
