When I left x last November, I not only deactivated my account - I also deleted the app altogether, and I haven't regretted it once. I simply can not understand how anyone can stay on there *knowing what it is*.

I can kinda understand how certain figures felt they "need" a bigger "audience" (even though a high % of followers are bots!), but I cannot understand how *anybody* can feel comfortable staying on there now when *they know exactly what it is*. Tbh, I think less of them for staying there.

Yes to encouraging others to leave, ('though I don't understand why they're still there), but also we really need "official" accounts to move from there to here. Again, I can't understand why they haven't moved already, but Bluesky won't grow properly until that happens.

A 9am EDT update from the National Hurricane Center puts Melissa's sustained winds at 180 mph and moving NNE at 7 mph towards Jamaica, where it is expected to make landfall within the next few hours. Visit hurricanes.gov for the latest.

1. Jamaica: Remain sheltered! Catastrophic flash flooding,
landslides, and destructive winds will continue through today,
causing widespread infrastructure damage, power and communication
outages, and isolated communities. Total structural failure is
possible near the path of Melissa’s center. Along the southern
coast, life-threatening storm surge and damaging waves are expected
through the day. Failure to act may result in serious injury or loss
of life.

2. Haiti and the Dominican Republic: Catastrophic flash flooding
and landslides are expected across southwestern Haiti and southern
portions of the Dominican Republic through midweek. In Haiti,
extensive damage and isolation of communities is likely. Tropical
storm conditions are expected later today and Wednesday.

3. Eastern Cuba: Heavy rainfall, flash flooding and landslides are
expected soon. Life-threatening storm surge and damaging winds are
likely to begin later today. Complete all preparations now.

4. Southeastern and Central Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos:
Hurricane conditions, life-threatening storm surge, and heavy
rainfall are expected across portions of the southeastern and
central Bahamas on Wednesday. Complete preparations by tonight and
follow local official guidance. Tropical storm conditions, heavy
rains, and significant storm surge are expected in the Turks and
Caicos Islands on Wednesday.

Lee Miller exhibition at Tate Britain. The photobooth was only a couple of years old in 1927 - nearly a century later, how many cooler strips are there than Lee’s?

A lot of people on social media like to point out that when people die the tributes are often accompanied by photos of them when they were young and beautiful (as opposed to old and beautiful). So let me just say that I’m posting this because it’s one of my favourite portraits full stop by one of the greatest ever British portrait photographers. And fuck off.

This does not, I think, diminish the point made, but it's important to point out that the role of Irish president is different from the American president. The Irish president is a "figurehead" - performs a "ceremonial" function. There is a "prime minister" (Taoiseach) who is the head of government.
