Beware of Radio Network Surveillance
Researchers at Germany's Karlsruhe Institute of Technology demonstrated a method for identifying individuals using standard Wi-Fi devices. They found Wi-Fi devices communicating with each other in a person's surroundings produce patterns based on radio waves that are similar to images captured by cameras. The individual does not need to have a Wi-Fi device in their possession, and special hardware is not needed to identify anyone in range of a wireless local area network.
Thanks for sharing! :-)
Funny cause it's true 😬
Very unusual but probably the best conference keynote we ever had the pleasure of attending: David Basin explaining how security and privacy by design may actually work with the help of formal logic.
Now have it quickly vibe code and run the experiment to finally finish the eval, discussion, and conclusion sections, that should be easy! ;-p
Key impact: Any passive eavesdropper can turn any modern WLAN into a person-identification system without special hardware or user interaction.

This research highlights urgent privacy risks as WiFi sensing becomes standardized. We're calling for protective measures in upcoming WiFi standards.
"BFId: Identity Inference Attacks Utilizing Beamforming Feedback Information" reveals how this standard WiFi 5+ feature creates an invisible surveillance vulnerability in everyday networks.
🎉 Happy to share that Julian presents our paper showing how beamforming feedback information - openly broadcast by WiFi devices and accessible to any passive network sniffer - can identify individuals with near-perfect accuracy, even those who don't carry any devices, at ACM CCS in Taipei this week!
Title of our paper at CCS 2025, demonstrating an attack using beamforming feedback information to identify individuals walking through a WLAN

Where in Belgium was this photo taken!? 🤔

We show how mere sniffing of bfi reports (Wi-Fi 5 and above) suffices to identify individuals strolling through wlan-served environments. Check it out, also at ACM CCS next week!

This isn't even funny in any funny way. I wonder at what stage someone will start fighting back, you're on a straight path to authoritarianism, and fast.

It is Wednesday morning and I need $15,000 to fall from the sky so that a group of extremely high-risk activists can continue to get anti-doxxing protection and data-deletion services.

I am not enjoying this week. Zero stars on WeekAdvisor.
