My latest work: in Autumnal Conductor, Proserpina must travel through the pit of the underworld, turning sinners and kings into her devoted women: lesbians, a festival of sex and violence; a living mythology of you

If you are wondering how mind fucking this game is, there is a part about neural network self hypnosis through an hallucinogenic episode that I must have imagined because I went looking for it today and could not find it.

Physical copies of Threadcutters are here! So is Cedric.
A picture of the cover of the latest game by me and Galen Pejeau, Threadcutters, the book held up in front of a very handsome black and white cat, who is called Cedric.

If you're wondering what this is and why I'm so hyped for it, you should read @strigarosa.bsky.social's essay.

"We’re out here doing the Black Flag and NOFX and Bad Religion of roleplaying games."

@machineiv.bsky.social and the crew behind an #iHunt short film have big aspirations for the scrappy, satirical tabletop RPG all about a monster hunting gig economy.

Why this game that stalls if you fail one roll has a possibility of *failing a roll*?
strigarosa.bsky.social
It all comes to the basic question. "What is my desired gamestate". Then you have to justify really well why you have something that somehow, creates other gamestate OR makes the desired gamestate impossible.

Why this game where combat is "a failure state" has so many ways to get into combat?
strigarosa.bsky.social
Like, what are *we doing*? If pacing is that important, why all mechanics create a *random* pacing? And is up to the GM to find it/set it? Why we rolling or stacking dice at all?
strigarosa.bsky.social
to an impossible degree and kept punishing players from trying things... then also, because dice-stacking was useless at setting pacing, if the players were competent at rolling/stacking dice, to just ignore the stacks and continue as they failed.
strigarosa.bsky.social
The worst combo I have seen is games that assume competence AND give levers to the GM to *force* failure. It just seems deplorable, avoiding having to do actual design work by have a lever just pull the rug under the players. Worst case I have seen this was a game whose mechanic was dice stacking

For tons of folks, there was that -one- game that blew the doors open and showed what #TTRPGs could be. The one that started the #IndieGame rabbit hole.

What was YOUR "gateway" indie #TTRPG? The first one that made you realize a whole other world was out there?

And what they replace this need for connection with? Multiverses. Because the transformative communication of art has been restrained and deemed undesirable, the communication is between pieces of IP. And multiverses to allow them to be artificially, sterily, stitched together.
strigarosa.bsky.social
So it does not matter what it is, how it is, who makes it, the important part, the human part, is on the stamping of the Superman IP. Stripped of it, it has to stand on its merits - and has to do it alone. For it is isolated, not in dialogue with the artistry that shaped lives.
strigarosa.bsky.social
Why? Because this human need to communicate, ability to perceive the environment and what shapes and transforms them and others, cannot be copyrighted or manufactured. The only allowed connection to what came before and existing art is, well, IP. Superman is the sole connection to Superman.
strigarosa.bsky.social
People actually like derivative stuff, as long as it is in dialogue with what it is being derivative of. Having a drive, being part of a movement, having a chat with the stuff that came before you. It carried mediocre jjk, kny, black clover, etc.

But we cannot have this in your main stream.

Me when I have to choose who gets the nobel for peace, any of the people who risked their lives in Gaza to save as many palestinians as possible and document the invasion or the latest heir to a dynasty of robber barons hell bent on selling her own country to the US.
