It's time for a new pinned thread now that Wooing the Witch Queen is out in the US and the UK!

stephanieburgis.com/books/wooing-the-witch-queen
An image of the North American front cover of Wooing the Witch Queen shows a sinister witch queen in a spectacular beaded dress embracing her handsome and adoring new librarian (in a black wizard's robe) inside a library of magic filled with crows and masks and flying books. The tagline reads: Love can be a witch. A blurb from Sarah Beth Durst (New York Times bestselling author of The Spellshop) reads: “Full of charm, wit, and magic… I loved it!”
Around the image, against a starry night background, are various pieces of text connected to it by arrows. They read: “bi villainous heroine,” “sweet cinnamon-roll hero with a fake identity,” “crow friends,” “found family,” and “flirting with fountains pens.” At the bottom of the image are the words: Out now! In the centre of this image is the beautiful British cover of Wooing the Witch Queen, by Stephanie Burgis. The illustration shows a man in a cloak riding headlong through the night towards an ominous castle with an illuminated, crowned female figure in its doorway and bats flying overhead in the moonlight. A potion vial surrounds that central image and is further framed by leaves and branches. Crows sit on the branches, and a tagline reads: Love can be a witch. A blurb from Sangu Mandanna reads: ‘Warm and lovely’
On the lefthand side of the image around the cover is a stalk of herbs, surrounded by magical stars; on the righthand side is a fountain pen. The text above and below the cover reads: ‘He had to remember that she was infinitely more likely to kill him than to kiss him…’
Out Now in the UK!

Checking in with my daily snippet and a photo from my current writing retreat!

This week's Tuesday snippet comes from Enchanting the Fae Queen, which arrives in just over 3 months. Preorder it now: stephanieburgis.com/books/enchanting-the-fae-queen

#romancelandia
The illustrated cover for Enchanting the Fae Queen, by Stephanie Burgis, shows a mischievously grinning woman with long blonde curls, a moonstone crown, a pink dress and bare feet, sitting perched in a tree teasing the uniformed general who stands before her, his expression determined and one of his hands around her closest leg while she pokes his strong nose with one finger. Vines of leaves sweep magically out from the tree around her to draw him towards her. The tagline reads: All’s fae in love and war. The text beside and below it reads: “I take it you abducted my travel trunk at the same time you abducted me?” he asked wryly.
“It was the only polite option,” she assured him. “You see, none of the men’s clothing left with me across the years would have been nearly large enough to fit. You wouldn’t have cared for it at all.”
His expression was skeptical. “And you were, of course, terribly concerned about my preferences when you chose to abduct me.”
“Of course!” Lorelei said piously. “I might be wicked, darling, but it’s never necessary to be cruel.” A corridor painted in mint green, with a leafy green plant set on a windowsill along the way, leads to a low, round wooden door in medieval style.

A quick note: I'm on writing retreat this week, so I'm trying to stay mostly offline, but I will be popping in once a day with snippets.

So, today's Monday snippet comes from A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence on its 2-week birthday! Snap it up now: books2read.com/honeymoonGrave

#romancelandia
The illustrated cover for A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence, by Stephanie Burgis, shows the silhouette of an elegant traveling carriage over the title and a bat with wings outstretched underneath, all of it framed by apples and with mirrors at the top and the bottom of the image. Above and beside the cover is this snippet of text: A sharp-toothed creature from the depths of Germanic legend loomed above her, red-rimmed eyes furious in a deathly pale and hairless face. Their lean body was swathed in a shapeless black hooded robe with draping sleeves that fell away to reveal long, curving, yellow fingernails as they raised their arms menacingly above their head and let out an unearthly snarl of warning. “Begone or prepare to be devoured, witless prey!”
“Oh, I very much think not,” said Margaret. “Really, have you no respect for scholarly work—or basic courtesy? You nearly made me ruin a priceless piece of historical research just now!”
“I...” The creature blinked, narrow shoulders hunching, as Margaret gave them the same cold and distinctly unimpressed look she’d perfected across years of attempted bullying from larger and louder male colleagues at Morningford College.
For a moment, she actually thought they might see sense and apologize.

Papa Smurf wears a Phrygian cap, most often associated with the French Revolution, indicating Smurf Village had a monarchy it has since overthrown. This makes Papa Smurf, de facto head of state post-revolution, akin to Robespierre. In this essay I will —
An image of Papa Smurf, a small blue man with a white beard. He’s wearing red trousers that lead into shoes and a red cap that slouches forward.

This is such a clever idea on taking kids to museums/galleries
www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...
Nadia from London has an idea that sounds such fun you'll be booking a day out asap.
"I've always loved museums," she says,
"but they can be overwhelming for children. For decades now, I've done something called 'playing postcards'
We do
the museum backwards, visiting the gift shop first. Each child gets to choose three postcards. Then they take it in turns to find that particular artwork in the museum and give us a little information about the piece from the details on the postcard, or from any gallery plaque. At the end of this treasure-hunt-style activity, we vote for our favourite in the cafe."

Olivia, have you read Susan J. Morris's Strange Beasts yet? It's sapphic historical fantasy/horror/adventure, and I think you'd love it for so many reasons, but ALSO it has the best scenes set in the Paris catacombs!

I just pre-ordered the @merriam-webster.com 12th edition New Collegiate Dictionary, and I feel like someone could write a dissertation on why these particular words were listed in the marketing copy.
It's a screenshot from the book description. it says "New words include: cold brew, farm-to-table, parklet, heat dome, rizz, gaslighting, telework, doggo"

Above and beside it is this snippet from the book:
The witch queen of Kitvaria might be capable of many previously-unheard-of things, but she was certainly not interested in flirting with him now. Perhaps she was in a whimsical mood, after whatever great spell she’d been working on the roof; more worryingly, she might be hinting at real anger.
Either way, he had to remember that she was infinitely more likely to kill him than to kiss him, no matter what his treacherously reawakening body might wish him to imagine.

About a month ago, the Trump administration got rid of the de minimis exemption, whereby packages valued under $800 could slide in without import duties. Now there's a backlog as the government can't process all of this paperwork, leading to UPS just destroying packages
Business Insider headline reads: UPS is telling customers that their packages coming to the US are marked for destruction.

This week's Saturday snippet comes from A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence, in which Lady & Lord Riven have just arrived at their surprisingly un-welcoming honeymoon destination, a secluded inn in the Black Forest. ❤️🦇

Above and beside the cover is this snippet of text: “Oh, you poor, innocent fools!” the voice groaned. “If you only had any notion of the dark horrors that lie in wai—oh.” The voice’s tone shifted abruptly as the glowing eyes reappeared and fixed on Lord Riven’s face. “You’re no human.”
“Indeed not.” Lord Riven smiled thinly, the tips of his sharp canine teeth visible by the dim glow of the nearby carriage lamp. “Nor have I been innocent for quite some centuries now, I assure you.”
“And I am no fool,” Margaret said briskly, “so if you’ll direct us to our chambers and arrange for our luggage and a meal to be sent there as quickly as possible, we would both appreciate it. Dawn comes early at this time of year, you know.”
“Not to thiiiiiis cursed house,” the spectral voice groaned...but soft footsteps shuffled obediently backwards, and the door finally swung fully open.

A lot of us come out again and again to different people at different times, & it's always scary, but there's also so much joy.
