Continuing a tradition since 2021, here's some of my favourites from the line-up for How I Paint Things this year.

If by bizarre chance at Christmas you're short on ways to spend the cash in your pockets, don't mind me rattling the tip jar: ko-fi.com/sonicsledgeh...

Diogenes! Diogenes, it's your cousin, Epiphanes! You know how you were lookin' for featherless bipeds?!

Ooh, that really is rather clever. I'd honestly always thought it'd be stencil or bust, but this is way more achievable.
sonicsledgehammer.bsky.social
Pencil in the stencil, eh? Now that's an interesting thought. Might have to give that a swing myself, see how it pans out.

I'd like to share an old family story, from Great Uncle Engelbert. This I never heard directly, though Mrs Sledge knew him from when she was very small, and he was one of the few in the family that spoke of his experiences in WWII. You'll never guess which side he was on, of course.

A thread.

Not only just 'still have them,' but they're still out on the cabinet shelves!

If we would only have known how apt you being tagged as Loki was back in the day!

Never thought "I've got models older than you... that I bought on release!" would be something that'd date me, and yet here we are.

Just now remembering that the core of my Imperial Guard army (Astra Militarum was a twinkle in the far-off future) is 19 years old, now. 19! It's older than someone on YouTube that knows 40k better than I do!

Duuude. I don't think I've ever seen anyone actually tackle Berlin brigade camo, that's awesome!

Okay in the grand scheme of things, that didnt take a million years and has come out pretty well for this scale.

Just 8 more to go now...

And the Fox's

And the FV432...

Oh god.

Seriously, 'fast' doesn't cover it. Just a couple of extra details on each while the majority of the miniature is a few seconds of Speedpaint and drybrushing. A very special How I Paint Things covering the @wargamesatlantic.bsky.social Operators:

Which historical organizations? They're not really designed to represent anything specific, I don't think. The equipment's all fairly generic and they're in loose trousers rather than real 'uniforms,' so what they look like is more down to how you paint them. Maybe light US infantry at a pinch?

Pleased for how these have come out for the work that's gone into them. The clothing and webbing is all simply primer, Speedpaint, drybrush and an all-over wash once the other details are done. Mooks in Minutes. The @wargamesatlantic.bsky.social Operators kit is a superb wee box of plastic.

Me: Okay, I need to head out for a few minutes. Got to remember to close the door behind me so the dog doesn't sneak out.
Me:
Me: Oh. Yeah, no. I don't.

Oh, for sure. There's lots of good reasons. But what always gets me is that they weren't just shot out of spite; someone had to make the call that the prisoners would get that win after a fire which clearly benefited them.

Finished last night, 15mm platoon of King's African Rifles for #Chainofcommand2 along with a FOO and support MMG. Figures mostly from Battlefront, but also includes some Peter Pig and Eureka. #spreadthelard

Maybe they were more trouble than they were worth and emptying the camp was a preferable outcome. Maybe someone in a position of power had a heart and knew the 'mysterious' fire was a chance to do something small and good.

E. never knew, but he made it home.

I think about that fire a lot, lately.
sonicsledgehammer.bsky.social
Overnight, all those men in the camp were from American-controlled sectors in West Germany. Now, E. admitted to surprise that anyone was allowed to go at all - he'd have thought the politruki would just gun them all down out of spite. But instead they rolled their eyes and just... let them go.
sonicsledgehammer.bsky.social
Somehow - in a section of the camp where no prisoners were allowed, in the administration complex where those papers and passes were kept - a fire started late one night. A dropped cigarette, an electrical fault; nobody knew the cause. Quick action saved the building, but not one of those documents.
sonicsledgehammer.bsky.social
But most of the men in the camp had been captured with their papers; name, regiment, where they were from... which meant the politruk knew who to release, and who would be staying.

Except a couple days before the scheduled release, they didn't know any more. There was a fire.
sonicsledgehammer.bsky.social
But one day, E. was sharing a cigarette with a guard when the man explained, "A prisoner release is coming. Men from American-controlled sectors only; we have to smooth things with the yazniki."

E. was from Bavaria. At some point in early '50, he was allowed to go. Just... gates open, and leave.
sonicsledgehammer.bsky.social
When times were lean, he said, a guard would come to the barracks and tell the prisoners very apologetically, "No food. So we shoot. One or two only. Orders."

Recognizing it meant their fellows would likely survive a little longer, there wasn't much resistance to this (uncommon) chain of events.
sonicsledgehammer.bsky.social
He recognized that the soldiers he'd been squared off against were basically peasants for the most part, and had little to do with the top-down psychosis of the Soviet Union. Likewise - to his good luck - the guards didn't hold much of a grudge against the Germans. Even after the Hunger Plan.
sonicsledgehammer.bsky.social
E.'s style was humour. There wasn't anything so grim nor foul that it couldn't be laughed at, and he kept spirits up with both prisoners and guards - the way he told stories of his times in Soviet custody made it sound like a trip to Butlin's. But he had a great respect for the people around him.
