I mostly ramble about trivial nerd stuff, but I'm also on a Bluesky list for "angry politics." My politics are that bigots should fall into a deep, empty well. He/Him. Pfp: Guybrush Threepwood falling down against a blue sky. Banner: Guybrush flying.

RIP Drew Struzan - a man whose talent and imagination etched onto so many minds throughout the last 40+ years.

His art & posters are some of the first visuals I think of when I think about cinema - an invitation to watch these stories and worlds.

A massive loss 💔

Gotten to the Echoes of the Eye portion of my Outer Wilds replay, and it's silly - I *know* how it works, I know that those owl-elk motherfuckers won't turn up until after you do specific things, and I'm STILL tense as fuck as soon as I'm running around in there.

Also, you think people's concern with the use of genAI is direction and review? What the fuck do I care, your game went out the window the second you turned to world-burning plagiarism software.

Interesting how the disclosure doesn't mention the voice recognition, only character voices. If you actually made the advanced part of your game without genAI, and then used it for fucking VOICEOVER, that's a mindbogglingly unforced error.

So, I stumble upon an intriguing game trailer on YouTube. The concept seems interesting and even timely. It turns out it runs on voice command. Potentially cool, but also raises some flags. Go to Steam to check and, yeah 😑
AI disclosure from Steam page (I'm not linking the fucking game):

We use generative AI for character voices, with detailed direction and review by our creative team.

It's a mark of shame, and it should be treated as such, just stamped on the fucking forehead of your game page

I do like that Steam has an "AI generated content disclosure" section now, but it should be at the very top to save us all some time.

If you see this QRP with a game that released the year you were born

Ironically, I was a Sega kid...
Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo Entertainment System, 1985

I hate that this is just part of the process of deciding whether or not to be excited for a game. "Gotta check if they're using shitbots to save a few bucks"

Nothing but respect for MY Tron sequel
The cover of Tron 2.0, a 2004 FPS/action adventure video game. Protagonist Jet Bradley is decked out in full Tron gear, holding a disk in one hand and a gun in the other. A screenshot from Tron 2.0. The player is standing in a red and black room, in the digital realm. An enemy is in front of them - an anti-virus program named "Port_monitor.exe"

Just one year too old to match up with my actual first console mascot (soon to be usurped by Sonic)
Alex Kidd in Miracle World, a 1986 platformer that came integrated in first gen Sega Master System consoles.

I found a 19th century Cat Villain!
A huge chonk of a fluffy cat sitting on a table near an open fire. The cat is cream and grey and appears to be shaped like a barrel in a fur coat. They are scowling fiercely with their moustache and bewhiskered ears apparently flowing back into the cold wind. There's a definite vibe that this villainous cat twirls their moustache as they evict orphans into the aforementioned blizzard and think Scrooge was an easy-going lightweight. They are magnificent.

Controversial old person gaming opinion that will only make sense to a small group of 30+ year old nerds:

I like Journeyman Project better than Myst.
The box cover of The Journeyman Project, a sci-fi first person adventure game that one might call Myst-like - except the original version predates Myst by half a year. The cover features a couple of threatening robots and a floating dome city. A screenshot from The Journeyman Project. The environment is viewed through a visor that only takes up half the screen or so. There's an inventory underneath, compass direction displayed above, and in the corner of the screen are directional arrows.
