The truest mark of a Vulcan

Reading Michael Martin’s ENT Romulan War: To Brave the Storm while drinking my morning coffee.

Came across this Vulcan word:

V'tosh rik'ortal—a Vulcan without sarcasm.

Such a Vulcan probably doesn’t exist.
"Whatever you may believe to be wrong with you, Hoshi," T'Pol said, "your grasp of the obvious remains unimpaired." It occurred to her that even among the strictest Syrrannite orders on her homeworld, there might be no such thing as a V'tosh rik'ortal—a Vulcan without sarcasm.

NEW! From Kal-toh to Kadis-kot to Kotra, we got you covered on the new TrekRanks as we maneuver through the "Top 5 Games and Gaming References" in #StarTrek history! This one is a stone cold TrekRanks classic, so spin the wheel & roll the dice w/your top picks!🎲

Artwork for the 219th episode of TrekRanks featuring the "The Top 5 Games and Gaming References." Images include the TrekRanks logo in the upper left corner and the "Move Along Home" game Chula top center from DS9. Across the middle from left to right are various images of Data (playing 3D chess in "Power Play"), Kirk (playing Fizzbin in "A Piece of the Action") and Naomi Wildman (playing Kadis-kot in "Infinite Regress").

As always, to keep you guessing, remember that the episodes reflected in photos here include some choices that were featured in this episode of TrekRanks, some choices that were maybe mentioned in our "Secondary Systems" section of the show, and some choices that weren't mentioned at all.

“And then I fell in love with a Klingon who had his body brutally altered to appear human and grafted a human identity onto his own mind,” Michael spits out playfully.

B’Elanna grins playfully. “You win.”

Michael pauses, breathes, and grins. “I do these days.”

Baptiste’s translation of Beethoven into jazz is seamless and organic. Somehow, he preserves the essences of each piece even as they swing and sway beneath his finger tips.

Now into Jon Baptiste’s work for and inspired by the superbly underrated Pixar film, Soul!

You can feel Baptiste’s soul slip playful across the keyboard.

“I definitely get that,” Michael says.

B’Elanna cocks her head, disapproving of the bid for unearned empathy.

“No, really,” Michael starts. “I was raised on Vulcan after my parents were killed—by Klingons.”

“I’m—sorry,” B’Elanna says softly.

Natalie Holt’s propulsive and emotional nuanced scores for Marvel’s Loki capture the intensity and deep character work in one of Marvel’s best series.

Christophe Beck’s scores for Marvel’s WandaVision is haunting and beautiful—just like the series.

…but you are powerless to compel anything but outward actions—without victimizing the victim through manipulation and psychological violence.

I implore you, all of you, if you value forgiveness let it be true and healing to both victim and perpetrator. Freedom is a prerequisite of true forgiveness.

Marina’s performance here was a shining example of her range.

TROI No one has power over what someone feels or thinks, First Minister. You may be able to force a victim like Charlish to say the words you want her to say…

Chris Westlake’s scores for Lower Decks captures the awe and wonder of Trek, building on the works of Goldsmith and Horner in respectful ways. It’s hardly the wallpaper compositions instituted by Berman—which had its place and includes some standout compositions.

Goldsmith’s Star Trek: Nemesis is a highlight in the franchise even if the film doesn’t reach the artistic heights of the score.

The score is mournful, vulnerable, bold, bombastic, and driven by an urgency that carries you along from track 1 to “A New Ending.”

It’s my 3rd favorite Trek score.

B’Elanna chuckles, pulling her hand away. “Yeah—well, the last Michael I knew turned out to be a mutinous jerk.”

Michael forces an awkward laugh.

“So—you’re not quite Klingon are you?” Michael asks, changing the subject.

“Half-Klingon, half-human,” B’Elanna replies. “All complexity.”

“Michael Burnham,” she says, extending her hand toward him. The purity of her blossoming smile triggers a warm sensation of joy across B’Elanna’s skin.

“B’Elanna,” she replies, shaking Michael’s hand. “Not many women names Michael.”

“I’m told I’m—unique,” Michael says.
