hi! i'm an animation professional who doesn't draw enough outside work. when i do, half the time it's something activisty. sometimes i do fan art, too.
Drawing of a clenched fist holding a carabiner attached to a chain wrapped around the wrist. in the background are old growth trees. The text reads "SAVE FAIRY CREEK" Drawing of an enormous excavator looming over a bottle depot, a small apartment building, and a house. The text reads "STOP PORT LIVING! DEFEND BROADWAY-CAROLINA" Fan art of Walther Caspari's "The Demon of Discord" (1899). A woman with long black hair walks away from a pile of skulls in a barren landscape. In the distance are tall skinny trees with spiked balls at the top. Fan art of Anakin Skywalker with his hair on fire. Ahsoka and Obi-Wan look on in shock, they are surrounded by blaster fire and the 501st Clone Army. Based on a "chaotic night club" photo.

sorry there was a Silly Walk reference at work and this is where my brain went. i am sure it is not an original joke

"To avoid making rhythmic noises which attract the sandworms, the Fremen cross desert spaces using the sandwalk, a dance-like motion with irregular rhythm which emulates the natural sounds of the desert."

Alt: John Cleese from Monty Python doing a Silly Walk, taking big and short strides, pausing, stepping backwards momentarily, etc

Or at the very least, I gotta look into Antonio Lopez more, cuz goddamn
squarehead333.bsky.social
This whole series of illos is career-best work by López, btw. Cycling gloves and caps and oversized knit sweaters have never seemed cooler

I really gotta start looking into more fashion illustration, this stuff is cool as -hell-

'emmanuelle khank ready-to-wear womenswear illustration by antonio lópez, french elle, 1967' in the fashion book - phaidon (2020)
Colored drawing of three women, two in long-sleeved midi dresses, one wears a black coat and a yellow midi skirt.

I'm glad to learn this because it would have driven me nuts to know that Araki was not aware of this guy's work (I was not until now, but the influence felt too strong to be a coincidence)

Similar to my post about "liberation means even for that annoying guy you hate" - weird art includes art you personally don't get, don't like, wouldn't spend money on, find unsettling. Games you wouldn't play. Books you wouldn't read. Decommercialise your preconceptions of what art deserves to exist

Everyone saying "make weird art!" you better fucking mean it. There better not be an unspoken "but not too weird" tacked on at the end.

One thing I want you to take from videos like this is the absolute cacophony of whistles and screams of "GET THE FUCK OUT OF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD" from people in the streets and in buildings. And more and more people are at that point every day.

Apparently! Though based on what I just read, this is from a 30 minute standalone film made a decade before the series, which i had also never heard of before seeing this clip

the reason i love animation is because with it, things like this are possible

"If you believe in land back why dont you give your land back" the same system that stole untold acres of indigenous land consolidated it in the hands of a minority of capitalists if I need to pay rent to an Indigenous nation rather than a parasite landlord that's at worst a lateral move for me

I've read a lot of reactionary writing over the years and this made me think about how - when they're engaged in critique - they can never make that critique beautiful or evocative of anything but disgust or rage.
Like how conservative comedy collapses because they get too mad at a dozen things at once and forget to actually deliver a punchline corresponding to where the joke started, the centers of these other conservative artworks cannot hold. They just get too damn hopped up and start cramming the work with their every grievance! Right?? I have a friend who is so completionist that he won't play newer games until he plays the predecessors- but it takes him forever to play even one game. I'm so sad he's just going to miss... everything. There's so much incredible stuff coming out all the time! Too much stuff even!!

I hope this helps someone, but I left it in my notebook about the effect of art becoming interesting.
